IAF To Arm More Sukhoi’s With Brahmos Missiles
- The IAF is going to arm more Sukhoi-30MKI jets with the precision-strike BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, whose range has been extended from 290 to 450 km, even as a blueprint is also being drawn to indigenously upgrade all the 260 such Russian-origin fighters in the combat fleet.
- Impressed with the first test of 450-km BrahMos from a Sukhoi-30MKI jet in the Bay of Bengal in May, IAF plans to send another 20-25 jets for the structural, electrical, mechanical and software modifications required to carry the 2.5-tonne missile to defence PSU HAL.
- These Sukhois will be in addition to the original 40 jets earmarked for BrahMos missiles. Thirty-five of the first 40 Sukhoi’s with the 290-km BrahMos have been delivered back to IAF by HAL.
- IAF considers the combination of Sukhois, which have a combat radius of almost 1,500-km without mid-air refueling, and the 450-km range conventional (non-nuclear) BrahMos missiles to be a deadly weapons package with strategic reach.
- These air-to-ground BrahMos missiles can carry out pinpoint strikes on high-value military targets, underground nuclear bunkers, command-and-control centres on land or aircraft carriers and other warships on the high seas.
Kenya Military Delegation Visits IMA Dehradun
- In furtherance of traditional Indo-Kenya ties and defence cooperation, Maj Gen FG Ahmed, Commandant, Kenya Military Academy, visited the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun from October 5 to October 7, 2022, along with a high-level delegation comprising five members from Kenya Military Academy.
- Maj Gen FG Ahmed is the first woman to hold the rank of General in the Kenya Armed Forces and the Commandant of Kenya Military Academy.
- The visiting delegation was shown in detail the training regime being followed at the Indian Military Academy including representation from friendly foreign countries.
- The General was highly impressed with the determined and daring junior leadership, the raw courage of our Gentleman Cadets at the tactical level and the swift execution of military strategy and plans displayed during the operational tasks assigned to them as part of training.
- The Kenya delegation appreciated the State of the Art training facilities at the Indian Military Academy being utilised for training the Gentleman Cadets to face the varied challenges of modern-day warfare. They also commended the staff for maintaining such stellar training standards.
- The General interacted with Lt Gen VK Mishra, AVSM, Commandant, Indian Military Academy on training and administrative matters. They exchanged notes on various aspects of military training. The interactions clearly symbolised the spirit of friendship and cooperation between the two friendly Nations.
- The Kenya Army General also interacted with the Gentleman Cadets undergoing pre-commission training at IMA. She applauded the GCs for their display of camaraderie, teamwork and resilience.
- She emphasised that it is commendable to mention that IMA has produced top-class military leaders who have risen to the highest levels not only in India but also in friendly countries that send their cadets for training here. The officers passing out from here have physical and mental toughness and are capable to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds, hostile terrain, weather, and a determined enemy and bring glory to their motherland.
Anti-Narcotics Operation
- In a coordinated operation at sea, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and Indian Navy apprehended a suspicious vessel carrying more than 200 kgs of narcotics. The boat with its crew, has been escorted to Kochi for further investigation.
- This is significant not only in terms of quantity and cost but also signifies a focus on collaborative efforts for disruption of the illegal narcotics smuggling routes, which emanate from the Makran coast and flow towards various IOR countries.
- Apart from the human costs of drug addiction, the spoils of narcotics trade feed syndicates involved in terrorism, radicalization and criminal activities. The successful conduct of this operation reaffirms our strong commitment and resolve to not allow seas as global commons to be used for illegal activities, especially in India’s maritime neighborhood.
DPSUs Indigenised 72 Items Before Their Original Timelines: Govt
- The defence public sector undertakings (DPSUs) have carried out indigenisation of 72 sub-systems and components much before their original timelines, the defence ministry said on Friday.
- “Putting Atmanirbhar Bharat on fast track, 72 items out of a total of 214 items mentioned in the first and second positive indigenisation lists have been indigenised by DPSUs well before their original indigenisation timelines of December 2023, December 2024 and December 2025,” the ministry said.
- It said the main sub-systems and line replacement units that were indigenised include the magazine fire-fighting system for ships, the steering gear system, pressurized containers for Akash missiles and the prism optical instrument for battle tanks.
- India has been one of the largest importers of arms globally. According to estimates, the Indian armed forces are projected to spend around USD 130 billion (one billion is equal to 100 crore) in capital procurement in the next five years.
- The government now wants to reduce the dependence on imported military platforms and has decided to support domestic defence manufacturing.
- The defence ministry has set a goal of a turnover of USD 25 billion (Rs 1.75 lakh crore) in defence manufacturing in the next five years, including an export target of USD 5 billion worth of military hardware.
The IAF Intends To Extend The Life Of Su-30 MKI Fighter Jets From 25 To 35 Years
- The IAF has started a programme to conduct life extension studies on its Su-30 MKI frontline fighter aircraft in order to determine the feasibility of raising its calendar life from 25 to 35 years.
- Aircraft life extension is not the same as aircraft upgrade. While an upgrade involves improving combat capability by introducing newer systems, life extension entails inspecting the platform’s structural integrity and establishing how long it can function effectively.
- The IAF stated in an expression of interest (EOI) issued on October 4 that only Indian firms with the required expertise will be allowed to participate in the project, which will be conducted at the 11 Base Repair Depot in Nashik.
- The work will be undertaken in three phases. The first phase would involve study of aircraft structural issues, defectation data and analysis of flight data will be carried out by the depot to determine the life extension checks to be undertaken. This includes corrosion removal on the airframe, repair and strengthening of certain load bearing-areas and a few structural modifications.
- In the second phase, the industrial partner, which will be responsible for the process and quality control as well as provisioning manpower, equipment and consumables, will carry out life extension checks on one aircraft under the depot’s close supervision.
- In the third phase, life extension checks on the remaining aircraft will be carried out independently by the industry in accordance with pre-defined timelines. According to the EOI, three to five aircrafts will undergo life extension checks per year.
- The twin-engine heavy, multi-role Su-30 is assembled indigenously by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, which has also been involved in several upgrade projects undertaken on the aircraft over the past decade. It now forms the backbone of the IAF’s fighter jet fleet.
- Among the most significant modifications of the Su-30 is adapting it to launch the airborne version of the Brahmos supersonic cruise missile, giving it an enormous offensive punch up to a range of about 500 km. Other past upgrades include integration of air-to-air missiles, avionics, mission software and other sub-systems from varied Indian and foreign sources.
