75th International Day Of UN Peacekeepers
- The Indian Army commemorated the 75th International Day of UN Peacekeepers, by paying homage to the fallen comrades by laying wreaths at National War Memorial, New Delhi by the COAS, VCOAS and representatives from the Navy and IAF, MEA and United Nations.
- This is the day when in 1948 the first UN peacekeeping mission, “UN Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO)” began operations in Palestine.
- India has a rich legacy of contribution to UN Peacekeeping operations and is one of the largest contributors of troops. It has contributed approximately 2,75,000 troops to peacekeeping missions so far, with around 5,900 troops currently deployed in 12 UN Missions.

India Launches, Successfully Puts Its First 2nd Gen Navigation Satellite Into Orbit
- In yet another feat, India has successfully put into orbit the first of its 2nd generation navigation satellite, NVS-01. After a flight of about 19 minutes, the NVS-O1 satellite was injected into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit.
- The three-staged GSLV rocket standing 51.7 m tall and weighing 420 tonnes lifted off from a launch pad at Sriharikota at around 10.42 am.
- The 2,232 kg NVS-01 satellite, which is a part of Indian satellite navigation system NavIC or originally called Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System, was carried by Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle. NavIC is an Indian ‘GPS’ – Global Positioning System.
- The Indian satellite navigation system NavIC consists of nine satellites – seven in orbit and two as substitutes. The NVS series of satellites will sustain and augment the NavIC with enhanced features.
Multinational WMD-Interception Naval Drill
- A Japanese warship was set to arrive in South Korea on Monday to participate in a multinational naval drill this week aimed at preventing the trafficking of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), according to officials.
- Japan’s JS Hamagiri destroyer is scheduled to arrive in the southeastern port city of Busan later in the day to participate in the Eastern Endeavor 23 exercise Wednesday in the international waters southeast of South Korea’s Jeju Island.
- South Korea, the U.S., Australia, Japan, Canada and Singapore will join the exercise led by the South Korean Navy’s Maritime Task Flotilla Seven. The exercise will be held a day after a high-level forum of the Proliferation Security Initiative.
North Korea Says It Will Launch Its First Military Spy Satellite
- North Korea said it would launch its first military spy satellite in June and described space-based reconnaissance as crucial for monitoring the United States’ “reckless” military exercises with rival South Korea.
- The statement came a day after North Korea notified Japan’s coast guard that it plans to launch a satellite sometime between May 31 and June 11 and that the event may affect waters in the Yellow Sea, East China Sea and east of the Philippines’ Luzon Island.
- Last week, the South Korean and U.S. militaries conducted large-scale live-fire drills near the border with North Korea as the first of five rounds of exercises marking 70 years since the establishment of their alliance.
INS Delhi Reaches Malaysia For Deployment In ASEAN Countries
- Indigenously designed and built Indian naval ship INS Delhi on Monday reached Malaysia as part of the Navy’s Eastern Fleet deployment to ASEAN countries, officials said. The INS Delhi is 163.2 metres long and is the lead ship of her class of guided-missile destroyers of the Indian Navy.
- The visit will see personnel from both navies engaging in professional and social interactions consolidating the strong bonds of friendship between India and Malaysia.
- The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
