The Danish Armed Forces has initiated a significant procurement program aimed at enhancing operational endurance by acquiring spare gun barrels for critical military equipment. This move encompasses the procurement of barrels for Leopard 2 tanks, the ATMOS artillery system, and the CARDOM mortar, with a total expenditure of 230 million Danish kroner (approximately $34 million). The funding for this procurement will be drawn from the acceleration fund, which is designed to bolster the military capabilities of Denmark.
The delivery of these spare gun barrels is expected to unfold over the next few years, marking a proactive approach to ensuring that Danish military units remain equipped and ready for various operational scenarios. The decision to invest in these essential spare parts has been influenced significantly by insights gained from Ukraine’s experiences in its ongoing conflict with Russia. Major General Peter Boysen, Commander of the Danish Army, underscored the importance of operational endurance, noting that the durability and reliability of weapon systems are crucial components in sustaining military effectiveness. “The experience from the very intensive battle in Ukraine shows the importance of operational endurance,” Boysen stated, emphasizing that this endurance is closely linked to the availability of critical spare parts.
Funding for this procurement is part of a broader strategic effort facilitated by the 50-billion Danish kroner ($7 billion) acceleration fund, which aims to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Danish military by 2025 and 2026. Strategists within the Danish Defense Ministry are acutely aware of the shifting security landscape and have assessed that Russia may bolster its military capabilities over the next two years, potentially posing a threat to NATO member countries.
Danish Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen highlighted the collaborative efforts between Denmark and Ukraine in this regard, noting that the ongoing conflict has provided valuable lessons that can be leveraged to strengthen Denmark’s military readiness. “The Ukrainians are gaining valuable experience in the war against Russia. Our close cooperation between the countries gives Denmark the opportunity to gain insight into their experiences,” Poulsen remarked.
