India–US Sign 10-Year Defence Cooperation Framework
India and the United States have signed a landmark 10-year framework agreement to strengthen their strategic defence partnership. The pact outlines a comprehensive roadmap for collaboration in key areas such as capacity building for friendly nations across Asia, Africa, and the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
The new framework seeks to enhance cooperation in tackling global challenges such as space security, missile defence, and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. It also promises faster export licence approvals for defence technologies and weapons systems.
Significantly, the agreement will support India’s growth as a logistics, maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) hub, boosting the domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem.
The framework reinforces the shared vision of maintaining a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific, aimed at countering rising assertiveness in the region. US Secretary of War, Hegseth, described the agreement as a “cornerstone for regional stability and deterrence,” highlighting deeper coordination, intelligence sharing, and technology cooperation between the two nations.
IAF Seeks Industry Collaboration for Cargo Drone Development
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has invited Indian industries to participate in developing cargo drones capable of carrying payloads up to 500 kilograms with a range of 500 kilometres and an endurance of five hours.
These drones are expected to transport supplies between the Indian mainland and the Lakshadweep islands, addressing logistical difficulties in maintaining infrastructure and manpower in the strategically vital region.
According to Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari, Vice Chief of Air Staff, the initiative aligns with India’s growing focus on aerial logistics solutions for remote island territories. Air Marshal Manish Khanna, AOC-in-C of Southern Air Command, also emphasized that these drones could assist in disaster relief operations and medical deliveries beyond military roles.
Over 100 startups have already registered for participation in MBC-4, where the IAF inaugurated an exhibition titled ‘Over the Sea Cargo Drones for Logistics and Mobility Solutions for Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands’ in partnership with FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry).
The event included one-on-one interactions between Air Force commanders and company representatives, offering insights into the IAF’s future operational requirements and priorities.
DRDO Conducts Flight Trials of ‘Swayam Raksha Kavach’ Suite
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has initiated advanced flight testing of its latest airborne electronic warfare system, the Swayam Raksha Kavach (SRK), designed for integration with the HAL TEJAS MK-1A Light Combat Aircraft.
An evolution of the earlier D-29 EW suite used on the MiG-29, SRK will significantly enhance the self-protection and threat response capabilities of the upcoming TEJAS MK-1A fleet. The system includes an integrated Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) and an external jammer pod, providing rapid detection and neutralization of enemy radar threats through active jamming and improved situational awareness.
The DRDO expects to complete testing by mid-2026, aligning with the TEJAS MK-1A production schedule. The SRK offers better signal processing, threat identification, and response accuracy, ensuring India’s indigenous fighter aircraft are equipped with advanced self-defence technology.
L&T and General Atomics Partner for RPAS Production in India
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has signed a major agreement with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI) of the United States to jointly produce Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) in India.
Under this partnership, the two companies will collaborate to manufacture Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drones, combining L&T’s manufacturing and system integration capabilities with GA-ASI’s global expertise in unmanned aerial systems.
The project aligns with India’s plan to procure 87 MALE RPAS under the Ministry of Defence, with L&T as the prime bidder and GA-ASI as the technology partner. The initiative supports the government’s ‘Make in India’ vision by enabling indigenous production, skill transfer, and technology absorption in the unmanned systems sector.
L&T’s defence portfolio already spans the development of naval vessels, aerospace assemblies, and weapon systems, making it one of India’s leading private-sector defence manufacturers.
Brigadier Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri Honoured at Longewala War Memorial
In a heartfelt tribute, the Indian Army has inaugurated a dedicated hall named after Brigadier Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri at the Longewala War Memorial (Longewala Yudhsthal) in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. Brigadier Chandpuri is celebrated as the hero of the 1971 Battle of Longewala, one of the most iconic battles in India’s military history.
The ‘Chandpuri Hall’ was inaugurated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on October 24 during the Army Commanders’ Conference, in the presence of Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi and other senior commanders.
Located close to the India–Pakistan border, the Longewala War Memorial was opened to the public in 2015 to commemorate the valour and sacrifice of Indian soldiers who defended the post against a large-scale Pakistani assault in December 1971.
Brigadier Chandpuri, who was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, led a small company of 120 soldiers from the 23 Punjab Regiment in holding off repeated enemy attacks until the Indian Air Force destroyed the advancing Pakistani tanks at dawn.
His bravery was immortalised in the Bollywood film ‘Border’, directed by J.P. Dutta, based on real-life events of the battle. Chandpuri passed away in November 2018 in Chandigarh at the age of 78. His family expressed deep gratitude to the Indian Army for preserving his legacy and honouring his service to the nation.
