India Looks At Sealing Two Mega Submarine Deals

  • India is likely to seal two mega submarine deals worth over Rs one lakh crore by the middle of next year to crank up its undersea warfare capabilities against the backdrop of China’s increasing naval prowess.
  • The first project that is being negotiated is for the procurement of three Scorpene submarines, which will be jointly constructed by state-run Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) and French defence major Naval Group.
  • Though the defence ministry cleared the nearly Rs 36,000 crore deal over two years back, there have been delays in negotiations to firm up various technical and commercial aspects of the project, the sources said.
  • The second project that the defence ministry is eyeing to seal is for the acquisition of six diesel-electric stealth submarines at a cost of around Rs 65,000 crore. The procurement was initially cleared by the ministry in 2021.
  • Leading German shipbuilder ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has partnered with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd for the project, billed as one of

Mine-Resistant Ambush-Protected (MRAP) Vehicle

  • Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), a key defence sector public enterprise under the Government of India, has unveiled its first indigenously developed medium mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicle, designated as the Medium Bullet-Proof Vehicle (MBPV).
  • In July 2025, in a significant step towards bolstering India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing, BEML Limited, a Schedule ‘A’ Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Defence, has inaugurated three new state-of-the-art production units at its Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) complex.
  • Representing a significant stride in India’s self-reliance drive for defence manufacturing, the MBPV is built with nearly 75% indigenous components, marking a substantial achievement in the “Made in India” initiative for armoured platforms.

Chandrayaan-5 To Be Launched From Japanese Carrier Rocket

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi undertook a significant two-day visit to Japan beginning on Friday, 29 August 2025, marking his eighth trip to the country as India’s Prime Minister.
  • The central highlight of this diplomatic engagement was the 15th India–Japan Annual Summit, held in Tokyo, where a series of high-level discussions and agreements aimed at strengthening the multifaceted relationship between the two Asian powers were concluded.
  • One of the most noteworthy outcomes of the summit was the formal agreement between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to collaborate on the ambitious Chandrayaan-5 mission.
  • This mission, which will be operated under the framework of the Lunar Polar Exploration (LUPEX) programme, is designed to conduct an extensive study of the moon’s south pole, a region of immense scientific interest due to its potential reserves of water ice and other critical resources.

Kalvari-Class Submarines

  • The DRDO through its High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) in Pune, has successfully developed and indigenised a signal star naval flare specifically designed for deployment on Kalvari-class submarines of the Indian Navy.
  • This achievement marks a significant stride both in enhancing the Navy’s operational readiness and in furthering the nation’s strategic objective of technological self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.The system was formally handed over to the Director General – Naval Armament Inspection (DG-NAI) in a ceremony held in Pune, symbolising its official induction into the Navy’s underwater warfare suite.
  • This dual-capability mechanism enables submarines to maintain secure and reliable communication with surface vessels and aircraft, ensuring operational coherence during joint exercises and tactical missions.

India, Saudi Arabia hold 7th Joint Committee Meeting

  • The 7th meeting of the India-Saudi Arabia Joint Committee on Defence Cooperation (JCDC) was held on Thursday, with both sides agreeing to expand collaboration in training, industrial partnerships, maritime security and military exercises.
  • The talks were co-chaired by Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence Amitabh Prasad and Staff Maj Gen Saad Mohammed H Alkathiri from the Saudi side.
  • The two sides reviewed progress made since the last JCDC meeting and expressed satisfaction that most of the significant decisions taken earlier had been implemented. They also discussed training capabilities and cooperation in new areas such as cyber security, information technology, disaster management and tactical communication.
  • The co-chairs noted the successful conduct of the Navy and Army Staff Talks this year and agreed to continue such exchanges.
  • India and Saudi Arabia’s defence partnership has been expanding steadily, with a Ministerial Committee on Defence Cooperation added under the Strategic Partnership Council during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Riyadh in April 2025.
