Rajnath Singh graces 83rd AFHQ Civilian Services Day
- Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has called upon the personnel of the Armed Forces Headquarters (AFHQ) Civilian Services to continue enhancing their skills in today’s fast-changing times for efficient policy making and implementation & execution of reforms being undertaken in the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
- The AFHQ Day is celebrated on 1st August every year to recognise the role of the personnel who work shoulder-to-shoulder with the Service personnel, primarily in the three Integrated Service Headquarters; HQ, Intergated Defence Staff and 24 Inter-Services Organisations of MoD.
- The foundation of AFHQ cadres was laid on August 01, 1942 by organising the then decentralised civilian posts/cadre operation as distinct entities under various Service Headquarters and Secretariat of Ministry of Defence and Finance (Defence) under the control of Chief Administrative Officer.
Lt Gen Sadhna Saxena Nair becomes first woman DGMS
- Lt Gen Sadhna Saxena Nair, on August 01, 2024, assumed the office of Director General Medical Services (Army), becoming the first woman to be appointed to this prestigious position. Prior to this, she was the first woman to hold the post of DG Hospital Services (Armed Forces) on promotion to the rank of Air Marshal.
- Lt Gen Nair graduated from the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune with a distinguished academic record and was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps in December 1985.
India, Vietnam Agree To Strengthen Comprehensive Strategic Partnership
- Emphasising that the current geo-political realities call for closer cooperation between New Delhi and Hanoi, PM Narendra Modi and his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Minh Chinh agreed to further strengthen the Vietnam – India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in all areas.
- The two leaders also recognised convergence in their world view and expressed support for a greater voice and role for Global South in international affairs, a joint statement following Vietnam PM’s visit stated.
- PM Modi and PM Chinh appreciated multi-dimensional institutional mechanisms between the two countries in the fields of foreign policy, security and maritime domain, defence cooperation, parliamentary exchanges, trade and investment, agriculture, healthcare, civil aviation, information and communication technology, science and technology including space and nuclear technology, tourism and culture.
- They agreed to intensify and strengthen the bilateral dialogue in various domains, including the Joint Commission for Economic, Trade, Scientific and Technological Cooperation for mutual benefit. They welcomed the signing of the Plan of Action for the implementation of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for the period of 2024-2028.
- The leaders agreed to further elevate trade from the present level of around USD 15 billion.
India, China Hold 30th Round Of Border Talks
- India and China on Wednesday held the 30th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs in New Delhi during which the discussion was “in-depth, constructive and forward-looking”, and both sides agreed to maintain the momentum through established diplomatic and military channels, the MEA said.
- The talks come amid indications that the two countries are making efforts to resolve the stand-off along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.
- Both sides agreed on the need to jointly uphold peace and tranquillity on the ground in the border areas in accordance with bilateral agreements and protocols reached between the two governments, the statement added.
- The two countries have been holding Corps Commander levels and the WMCC talks at the military and diplomatic levels as part of efforts to resolve the stand-off along the LAC in eastern Ladakh. The 21st round of Corps Commander talks were held in February though it did not reach a breakthrough towards disengagement in the two remaining friction areas.
Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera assumes charge as DG of Assam Rifles
- Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera on Thursday assumed charge as the new director general of the Assam Rifles, which is known as the “Sentinels” of the northeastern region. He succeeds Lt Gen PC Nair who retired after four decades of service.
- Lt Gen Lakhera has varied professional experience in serving in the northeastern region. He was commissioned into the 4 SIKH LI of the Indian Army on Jun 9, 1990.
- The General Officer is a post graduate from Defence Service Staff College, Wellington. He is an alumnus of the Higher Defence Management Course from College of Defence Management, Secunderabad and completed the prestigious National Defence Course from the Royal College of Defence Studies, London.
Exercise ‘Tarang Shakti’ 2024
- IAF vice chief Air Marshal AP Singh said that the air exercise ‘Tarang Shakti’ will be the largest international air exercise ever conducted in India, with invitations extended to 51 countries.
- The IAF has received confirmation from ten countries for participation with their assets and 18 countries as observers for the international exercise, which will be held in two phases.
- Phase one of the exercise will be conducted at Sulur in Tamil Nadu from August 6 to August 14 and four countries including France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom will participate with their assets.
- However, phase two will be held at Jodhpur in Rajasthan from September 1 to 14 and it will see participation from Australia, Bangladesh, Greece, Singapore, UAE and the USA with their assets.
- “We will see assets like F-18, A-18, C-130 aircraft, F-16 aircraft, A-10, KC-130 aircraft, KC-135 aircraft along with all the assets of the Indian Air Force taking part in this exercise. Eurofighter Typhoon and Rafale from other countries will also be taking part,” said Vice Chief Air Marshal AP Singh added.
- The Indian Navy will also be participating in phase one of the air exercise with MiG-29K aircraft, said the vice chief marshal, adding that another objective of the event is to showcase the booming indigenous defence ecosystem in India.
- In the flying part of the exercise, assets like Tejas, Prachand, Dhruv, and Rudra will be participating actively, showcasing India’s ability with indigenous products.
