Defence Ministry inks Rs 39,000 crore Deals

  • The defence ministry signed acquisition contracts worth Rs 39,125 crore on Friday, including the largest military deal for an Indian private sector company, that went to engineering major Larsen and Toubro (L&T).
  • The contracts included acquisition of upgraded fighter jet engines, supersonic cruise missiles, close-in weapon systems and high-power radars.
  • Cleared by the Cabinet committee on security (CCS) last week, five contracts were inked, with deliveries to start in the next two to three years.
  • The announced procurement of close-in weapon systems (CIWS) for the air force is the single largest procurement contract awarded to an Indian private sector entity (L&T) till date, at Rs 7,668.82 crore. The diversified conglomerate is also in contention to supply similar systems to the army.

India-Malaysia Bilateral Naval Exercise

  • A joint naval exercise between the navies of India and Malaysia is currently underway off Visakhapatnam, aiming to strengthen bonds and enhance interoperability between the two forces. Exercise ‘Samudra Laksamana‘ between the Indian Navy and Royal Malaysian Navy began on February 28 and will go on till March 2.
  • Indian Naval Ship Kiltan and Royal Malaysian Naval Ship KD Lekir are participating in the third edition of this exercise which has harbour professional interactions followed by the operational phase at sea.
  • The harbour phase involves professional interactions, subject matter expert exchange on topics of mutual interest, sports fixtures, and other interactions.

IAF Aircraft Suffers Technical Snag, Makes Emergency Landing

  • An Indian Air Force C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft made a safe landing at Hyderabad’s Begumpet Airport on Friday after reporting a technical snag during a routine sortie, a defence statement said.
    • According to the defence statement, the crew carried out actions as per the stated procedures and safely landed, with no injuries to any occupants and no damage to the aircraft.

BSF’s 1st Battalion celebrates 58th Raising Day in Garo Hills

  • The 1st Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) commemorated its 58th Raising Day with a week-long celebration, showcasing its rich history and exemplary contributions in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills.
  • Initially established at Tekenpur on March 1, 1966, as the 1st Battalion of the BSF, this remarkable force has left an indelible mark through its outstanding service, particularly during the 1971 war with Pakistan on the Western front.
  • The Border Security Force is India’s border guarding organisation at its borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. New Space Raises $52 Mn, The Largest Equity Raise

  • In possibly the largest equity raise by an Indian startup in the defence and aerospace sector, cutting-edge drone manufacturer Newspace Research & Technologies (NRT) has secured $52 million in a bridge round.
  • The company has raised a bridge round of $33 million of equity from marquee investors and secured debt facilities of $19 million from SBI’s startup hub and SIDBI.
  • NRT, which is a leader in swarm drone technology and has running contracts with the ministry of defence, has got three new venture capitalists on board—Cornerstone Venture Partners, 360 ONE Asset and Volrado Venture Partners. It is learnt that more than 40% of the current investment has been made by existing investors.
