Centre Notifies Acquisition of 382.82 Acres in Assam

  • Guwahati: Centre Notifies Acquisition of 382.82 Acres in Assam to Upgrade Tezpur Air Force Station. Ministry of Defence to secure land for advanced weapon systems and strategic assets for IAF’s 11 Wing.
  • The notification, “In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (v) of clause (e) of section 3 of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013 (30 of 2013), the Central Government hereby notifies that the Ministry of Defence shall, subject to the control of the President and until further orders, exercise the powers and discharge the functions of the ‘appropriate Government’.”
  • The notification said, “under the said Act for acquisition of private land measuring 382.82 acres for Air Force Station Tezpur at Bokajan Village, District Sonitpur (Assam) for infrastructure development, introduction of advance weapon system and associated strategic assets at 11 wing Air Force Station.”

K-6 SLBM Nears Testing Phase

  • India’s DRDO has announced that the K-6 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) stands on the cusp of its testing phase, marking a pivotal advancement in the nation’s sea-based nuclear deterrence.
  • Local media reports, corroborated by DRDO statements, highlight this progress amid ongoing developments in India’s Arihant-class submarines. The missile promises a strike range of up to 8,000 kilometres, enabling targets across vast swathes of Asia, Europe, and Africa from secure Indian Ocean patrol zones.
  • Development of the K-6 traces back to 2017 under DRDO’s Advanced Naval Systems Laboratory in Hyderabad, a facility renowned for its expertise in solid propulsion technologies, composites, aerospace mechanisms, and guidance systems. Building on the successes of predecessors like the K-15 Sagarika, K-4 and K-5 SLBMs.
  • While the K-4, with its 3,500-kilometre range, already equips earlier Arihant submarines, the K-6 introduces hypersonic speeds nearing Mach 7.5, rendering interception by adversary defences exceedingly challenging. This solid-fuel, three-stage missile measures over 12 metres in length and two metres in diameter, accommodating payloads up to three tons.
  • The K-6 hypersonic ballistic missile marks a major advancement in India’s naval capabilities, elevating the nation to the ranks of elite nuclear powers with cutting-edge submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) technology.
  • The missile crowns India’s K-series family, honouring former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, and embodies the country’s drive to build a robust second-strike capability amid escalating regional security threats.
  • The K-6 delivers exceptional performance, achieving hypersonic speeds of Mach 7.5—roughly 9,261 kilometres per hour—according to insights from former BrahMos project scientists.

CDS Chauhan Inaugurates Upgraded Runway

  • Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan inaugurated the upgraded runway at the IAF Car Nicobar Air Base marking a significant enhancement to India’s strategic military infrastructure in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
  • The resurfaced and upgraded runway represents a major upgrade to the air base, located approximately 535 km from Sri Vijaya Puram in the Nicobar district.
  • This narrow waterway serves as a primary passage for international trade and energy supplies, with over 80 per cent of China’s oil imports transiting through it annually.
  • The upgrade equips the IAF with greater capacity for rapid air operations, enabling swift deployment of fighter jets, transport aircraft, and surveillance platforms in response to regional contingencies.
  • The ANC, as India’s only tri-service command, integrates Army, Navy, and Air Force assets to safeguard over 5,000 km of India’s maritime interests, stretching from the eastern tip of the Malacca Strait to the western reaches of the Indian Ocean.

NIBE Secures ₹293 Crore Army Contract

  • NIBE Limited has secured a significant supply contract with the Indian Army under the Ministry of Defence for the manufacturing and supply of ground equipment, accessories, Electronic Sequence Programming (ESP) units, and ammunition tailored for the Universal Rocket Launcher System.
  • This development marks a revival of a major defence procurement initiative, with the total contract value standing at ₹292.69 crore, inclusive of taxes and duties. The system stands out for its versatility, capable of integrating multiple rocket types to deliver precision strikes at ranges of 150 km and 300 km.
  • The Universal Rocket Launcher System, often referred to as SURYA in collaborative contexts, derives from advanced technology originally developed by Israel’s Elbit Systems through their Precise and Universal Launching System (PULS).
  • NIBE Limited, a publicly listed entity on the BSE and NSE since its evolution from incorporation in 2005, specialises in mission-critical defence platforms for the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
