Exercise ‘Sagar Kavach’

  • A two-day exercise involving all maritime security agencies of the country was conducted off the Lakshadweep Islands from April 1-2. During the exercise, validation of the effectiveness of coastal security mechanisms while dealing with asymmetric threats emanating from the sea was undertaken, they said.
  • Assets of the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Police, fisheries, customs and other security agencies were engaged in the coastal security exercise — Sagar Kavach 01/24.
  • The exercise witnessed enhanced preparedness, response mechanism, surveillance capabilities and coordination between the coastal security stakeholders, the officials said.

Maldives President Muizzu Says Indian Troops From Second Platform To Leave Within April

  • Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has said that Indian military personnel manning the second aviation platform would be withdrawn “within the current month” and reiterated that the entire process would be completed by May 10, a media report said.
  • Muizzu’s statement comes three weeks after the first batch of approximately 25 Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives manning a helicopter gifted by India departed from the island nation after handing over the operations of the chopper to an Indian civilian crew as agreed ahead of the March 10 deadline.
  • Eighty-eight Indian military personnel were operating two helicopters and a Dornier aircraft which were providing humanitarian and medical evacuation services in this archipelagic nation.

Ajit Doval, Russian NSA Discuss Strengthening of Anti-terror Cooperation

  • NSA Ajit Doval met with his Russian counterpart Nikolay Patrushev and discussed measures to strengthen counter-terror cooperation. A special focus will be on the Afg-Pak and Eurasian region in the backdrop of the recent terror strike in the Moscow region that killed 144 people.
  • The two NSAs, who met at the sidelines of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in Kazakhstan, discussed countering terrorism both bilaterally and in multilateral formats, and emphasised on regular exchange of information about terrorist and extremist elements, sources told ET.
  • Doval strongly condemned the “barbaric” terrorist attack at the Crocus City Hall in Moscow on March 22 and expressed condolences to the families who lost their loved ones.
  • Doval conveyed India’s solidarity with the government and the people of the Russian Federation and discussed addressing the threat from terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

Visit By Vice Admiral Chief Of Royal Australian Navy

  • During his official visit to India, VAdm Mark Hammond, Chief of Royal Australian Navy, interacted with Adm R Hari Kumar, Indian Navy at New Delhi on 03 Apr 24. Discussions focused on avenues to strengthen bilateral maritime cooperation, including increased operational engagements, training exchanges, information sharing, etc.
  • India and Australia share commonality of perspective on several contemporary maritime security issues in the Indo- Pacific and have been working together closely in several bilateral and multilateral fora such as Indian Ocean Naval Symposium, Indian Ocean Rim Association, Western Pacific Naval Symposium (WPNS), ASEAN Defence Minister’s Meeting Plus (ADMM Plus) and QUAD.

Indian Navy’s P81 Aircraft Arrives In Japan

  • The Indian Navy said on Wednesday that its P8I aircraft have reached in Atsugi, Japan for bilateral anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and subject matter expert exchange with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).
  • The interactions with the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) included cross-ship visits, a professional exchange of ideas, a Joint Yoga Camp, and a coordination meeting for the Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX).
  • The visit of INS Kadmatt to Japan was aimed at further bolstering maritime cooperation between India and Japan.
  • India and Japan share ‘Special Strategic and Global Partnership‘. Friendship between the two countries has a long history rooted in spiritual affinity and strong cultural and civilizational ties.
