Three Theatre Command Bases Identified
- Even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured that the creation of Theatre Commands was on track, the Defence Ministry has identified three locations in Lucknow, Jaipur and Thiruvananthapuram as their headquarters.
- The Department of Military Affairs (DMA) under CDS Gen Anil Chauhan, who is responsible for raising the theatre commands, is now focusing their energy towards implementing over 150 points to enhance integration among the three services and make ready for the multi-domain warfare of the future.
- As per the plans of the DMA, the Western Theatre being raised to look after the Pakistan side is planned to be raised at Jaipur while the Northern Theatre to tackle the threat from the eastern and northern sides is planned to be set up at Lucknow.
- The Indian Navy-headed Maritime Theatre Command is now planning to come up at Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala and will be looking after the maritime borders of the country and threats emanating from the maritime zone.
Indian Army Propels Towards Zero-emission
- The Indian Army has procured 113 electric buses for the transportation of troops which will help the country to embark on significant efforts towards the government’s green initiatives.
- The 40-seater buses with an endurance of 250 kilometres are primarily for deployment in the plains and semi-hilly areas and are currently at the trial stage for procurement.
- The procurement is in line with the Government of India’s directive on zero-carbon emissions and marks a pivotal moment in the Indian Armed Forces’ journey towards eco-friendly transportation solutions.
Kazakhstan To Host Key Summits, Forums In 2024
- Kazakhstan is set to play a significant role on the global stage in 2024, hosting key summits and forums and chairing authoritative international organizations at once including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit and World Nomadic Games.
- EAM S Jaishankar arrived in Kazakhstan for the annual summit of the SCO and met his Kazakh counterpart Murat Nurtleu in Astana on ahead of the two-day meeting. The two leaders exchanged views on various issues, including India’s increasing engagement with Central Asia.
- Jaishankar will represent India at the SCO Summit on July 3 and 4, which is expected to focus on the regional security situation and ways to boost connectivity and trade.
- India’s priorities in SCO are shaped by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a ‘SECURE’ SCO. SECURE stands for Security, Economic cooperation, Connectivity, Unity, Respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and Environmental protection, the MEA said in a statement.
ISRO Keen To Be Part of Global Planetary Defence Efforts
- ISRO is keen on participating in a planetary defence mission in space ahead of a close shave for Earth with the Apophis asteroid on April 13, 2029, ISRO chairman S Somanath and senior scientists said at an international workshop held in Bengaluru on Wednesday to mark Asteroid Day 2024.
- The aim of the asteroid workshop, with school students in attendance, is to raise awareness on the impact threats of asteroids, the importance of asteroid research for a better understanding of the universe, and to inspire innovative solutions for planetary defence, the ISRO said.
- Asteroid Day is observed every year by the space community on June 30 on account of a huge air blast from an asteroid flattening 2,200 sq km of forest in Siberia, Russia, on June 30, 1908. Asteroids are hypothesized to have caused the extinction of dinosaurs. The event to mark International Asteroid Day was held on Wednesday at ISRO.
NCC Girl and Boy cadets to Mount Kang Yatse-II
- Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth flagged in triumphant expedition team of NCC Girl and Boy cadets to Mt Kang Yatse-II (Ladakh) at a ceremony held in New on July 03, 2024. The Raksha Rajya Mantri was the chief guest at the event. Speaking on the occasion, he praised the cadets for their outstanding accomplishment despite facing multiple odds like adverse weather conditions.
- The NCC Mountaineering Expedition team comprising 27 Girl & Boy Cadets, 05 Officers and 17 Permanent Instructors Staff successfully completed the expedition to Mt. Kang Yatse-II (6250 m) on June 21, 2024. The cadets managed the adverse effects of high altitude through rigorous training, acclimatization and medical support. While scaling the snow-laden summit, the cadets faced adverse weather conditions, heavy snowfall, strong winds and low temperatures which they surmounted with sheer perseverance, dedication and courage.
