Ghana Shows ‘Clear Interest’ In India’s Defence Equipment

  • During PM Narendra Modi’s historic visit to Ghana—the first by an Indian Prime Minister in over 30 years—both nations significantly deepened their bilateral relationship, elevating it to a comprehensive partnership with a strong focus on defence cooperation.
  • MEA Secretary highlighted that Ghanaian President John Mahama and PM Modi held extensive discussions centred on enhancing defence ties, with Ghana expressing a clear interest in India’s support for defence equipment, personnel training, and sourcing of defence systems.
  • Prime Minister Modi was also honoured with Ghana’s national award, ‘The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana’, recognising his distinguished statesmanship and leadership.
  • Modi listed the Grand Jubilee House, Foreign Services Institute, Komenda Sugar Factory, India-Ghana Kofi Annan ICT Centre, and Tema Mpakadan Railway Line – all built with Indian support – as symbols of the bilateral partnership. With two-way trade crossing $3 billion and Indian companies investing $2 billion in 900 projects across Ghana, the two sides set a target of doubling trade over the next five years.
  • The two leaders highlighted their plans to accelerate cooperation in key areas such as defence cooperation, food security and pharmaceuticals, especially vaccines. These initiatives dovetail with Mahama’s “Ghana Reset Agenda”, launched six months ago.
  • Modi offered to share India’s expertise with the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) digital payments system with Ghana and to provide affordable healthcare through Jan Aushadhi Kendras. “Indian companies shall cooperate in the exploration and mining of critical minerals,” he said.

IG Drones Bags Patent

  • IG Drones said that it has been granted the patent for India’s first indigenous defence drone simulator, a move hailed as a major step towards technological sovereignty and defence self-reliance under the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
  • The simulator, initially unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Defence Expo 2022, has been developed entirely in India.
  • It is designed to offer realistic, high-fidelity training to the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, and paramilitary forces for combat drone operations in complex scenarios such as GPS-denied zones and coordinated multi-drone missions, the company said.
  • The simulator is built using AI-based technologies, physics engines, and real-time terrain dynamics, and replaces reliance on imported systems and offers a secure, cost-effective alternative rooted in domestic innovation.
