Rafah Assault ‘Could Lead To A Bloodbath’: WHO Chief

  • An Israeli military incursion into Gaza’s southern city of Rafah could lead to a “bloodbath”, the World Health Organization warned Friday, announcing contingency plans.
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to crush Hamas’s remaining fighters in Rafah, where much of Gaza’s population has sought refuge from nearly seven months of war.
  • WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned of possible dire implications for the 1.2 million people sheltering in Rafah. Only 12 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals and 22 of its 88 primary health facilities are “partially functional”, the UN health agency said.

Indian Navy Begins Trials In Rs 60,000 Crore Tender For 6 Advanced Submarines

  • The Indian Navy has begun trials for building six highly advanced submarines in the country in a Rs 60,000 crore tender, as it is working towards the modernisation of its conventional submarine fleet.
  • Indian Navy has issued a tender to Indian shipyards Mazagaon Dockyards Limited and Larsen and Toubro for building six submarines in partnership with foreign vendors.
  • The trials began in March this year when a team of Indian Navy visited Kiel in Germany to look at the Air Independent Propulsion system of the German submarine manufacturer ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems at a German Navy facility.
  • The German firm is partnering with the Indian Defence Ministry’s shipyard Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) for the mega tender.
  • MDL is the prime partner in the tender where the indigenous content in the vessel would be more than 60 per cent.

India, Maldives Hold High-Level Core Group Meeting

  • Amid the ongoing diplomatic tensions, India and Maldives held their fourth High-Level Core Group meeting on Friday and discussed issues related to bilateral cooperation, including defence cooperation and efforts to enhance bilateral trade and investment.
  • The meeting was held in the national capital and both sides reviewed the ongoing efforts to enable the continued operation of Indian aviation platforms.
  • “During the meeting, both sides also reviewed the ongoing efforts to enable the continued operation of Indian aviation platforms that provide humanitarian and medvac services to the people of Maldives,” the statement added.

Littoral Response Group’s visit adds “new dimension to India-UK defence partnership”

  • The British High Commission appreciated the completion of the landmark visit of the United Kingdom’s Littoral Response Group (LRG) to India and stated that it adds a new dimension to the existing UK-India defence partnership.
  • The Littoral Response Group (LRG) arrived in Chennai on March 26 as the first engagement of the UK’s deployment to the Indian Ocean region. Littoral Response Group is a UK Royal Navy task group.
  • Further, he appreciated the engagement and stated, “These activities strengthen the foundation laid for future maritime engagements as part of the 2030 UK-India Roadmap.”
  • This is the first time a Royal Navy vessel will undergo maintenance at an Indian shipyard – a direct result of the logistics-sharing agreement signed between the UK and India in 2022.

IAF Takes Delivery of second C295 Transport Aircraft

  • The IAF on Friday received delivery of the second of the 56 C295 aircraft, which are set to replace its ageing Avro-748 fleet, the officials said.
  • In September 2021, India formalised the acquisition of 56 Airbus C295 aircraft to replace the legacy Avro fleet of the IAF at a cost of Rs 21,935 crore.
  • In a statement, Airbus Defence and Space said that of the total 56 aircraft ordered by the Indian customer, 16 will be produced by Airbus in Seville, Spain.
  • The remaining 40 C295s of the IAF order will be manufactured and assembled–in partnership with Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL)–at a Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Gujarat’s Vadodara.
