Fencing of India- Bangladesh Border
- The total length of India-Bangladesh border is 4096.7 km, out of which 3232.218 km has been covered with fence.
- length of 864.482 km of the India-Bangladesh border is yet to be fenced which includes a length of 174.514 km of non-feasible gap. The challenges faced in completing the feasible stretches of fencing projects relate to land acquisition, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) objections, limited working season and land slide/marshy land.
- BSF officials have maintained that at places where fencing was not possible due to the terrain, the force used sensors, CCTV cameras, flood lights in addition to deployment of guards to keep an eye on infiltration and cross border smuggling.
- Following Sheikh Hasina’s decision to step down after weeks of street protests against her government in August last year, BGB objected to construction of the fence at some stretches along the 865km which led to the construction being halted temporarily.
- These disputes will be taken up during the director’s general level meeting of BSF and BGB in New Delhi later this month.

At least 773 killed in DR Congo
- Authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have reported that at least 773 people have been killed in Goma, the largest city in the country’s east, and surrounding areas within a week due to ongoing clashes with M23 rebels.
- The M23 rebel group and Rwandan Defence Force (RDF) continued their march toward the city of Bukavu, having taken control of the provincial capital, Goma, earlier this week. Notably, M23 is one of more than 100 armed groups operating in eastern DRC, a region rich in minerals essential for global technology. According to United Nations experts, the group is supported by approximately 4,000 Rwandan troops. The Ministry of External Affairs said that around 25,000 Indian nationals live in the DRC, including approximately 1,000 in the conflict-affected city of Goma but most of them have moved to safer places.
- DRC President Felix Tshisekedi, in his first remarks since M23 rebels captured much of Goma, had said in a late-night address on Wednesday that a “vigorous and coordinated response against these terrorists and their sponsors is underway.”
Army Partners With IIT-Guwahati For Lightweight Bunker Material
- The Indian Army has recently partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati to develop innovative epoxy bamboo-based composites aimed at enhancing the construction of bunkers in high-altitude areas.
- This collaboration, formalized through a MoU is part of the Army’s broader initiative to modernize its defence infrastructure.
- The primary goal is to replace traditional building materials with lightweight and durable alternatives that can withstand harsh environmental conditions while providing adequate protection against small arms fire.
- This initiative aligns with the Indian Army’s vision for a “Decade of Transformation,” emphasizing innovation and self-reliance as part of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.
INS Aridhaman Set To Be Commissioned
- India is set to commission its third indigenously built nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), INS Aridhaman, in 2025, marking a significant upgrade to its sea-based nuclear deterrence capabilities.
- This follows the induction of INS Arighaat in August 2024 and represents a critical step in strengthening India’s nuclear triad—the ability to launch nuclear strikes from land, air, and sea.
- The submarine is a stretched variant of the Arihant-class SSBNs, with a displacement of 7,000 tons (compared to 6,000 tons for earlier models) and a length of 125 meters. This allows it to carry more K-4 submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), which have a strike range of 3,500 km.
- INS Aridhaman incorporates significant internal engineering upgrades over its predecessors, including improved stealth, survivability, and endurance for prolonged submerged patrols.
- India plans to build larger SSBNs (13,500 tonnes) with advanced reactors and longer-range missiles. Additionally, a ₹40,000 crore project to construct two nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs) is under consideration, aiming to bolster conventional warfare capabilities.
