India In Talks With Philippines For Developing Submarine Infrastructure
- India is in talks with the Philippines for development of submarine infrastructure, the Indian foreign ministry said on Tuesday, at a media briefing during Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos’s visit to India.
- The discussions signify a deepening partnership between the two nations against the backdrop of heightened geopolitical tensions and evolving security dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region.
- The initiative to develop submarine infrastructure is part of a broader agenda to strengthen maritime security cooperation, reflecting India’s expanding role as a security partner in Southeast Asia.
- Notably, the two countries sealed a pact involving the BrahMos missile system, symbolising a milestone in bilateral defence collaboration and technology transfer.
- For India, advancing defence ties with the Philippines complements its Act East policy and underscores its commitment to being a reliable security partner for ASEAN countries.
Sweden, Norway, Denmark Give $500 mn to NATO
- Sweden, Norway and Denmark will contribute around $500 million to a NATO-led initiative to supply Ukraine with U.S. weapons, including Patriot missiles, to ensure it can continue to defend itself against Russia, the three countries said.
- U.S. President Donald Trump said last month the United States would supply weapons to Ukraine, paid for by European allies, but did not indicate how this would be done.
- Denmark’s share is around $90 million while Norway said it will contribute around 1.5 billion Norwegian crowns ($146 million).
- Sweden said it was contributing $275 million to the package, which includes Patriot missiles and other air defence equipment, as well as anti-tank munitions.
- The Netherlands on Monday was the first country to announce its participation, with 500 million euros.

Trump Reacts to India Citing US trade with Russia
- US President Donald Trump on Tuesday reacted to India citing the United States doing trade with Russia and yet criticising New Delhi for doing business with Russia. “I don’t know anything about it, I’d have to check, but we’ll get back to you on that,” he said in reply to a reporter’s question.
- Trump announced 25 per cent tariffs on Indian imports and unspecified penalties last week, ahead of his August 1 deadline for tariffs to come into effect even as talks for a deal are ongoing. Later, Trump threatened to hike that rate due to New Delhi buying military equipment and oil from Russia, calling India “Russia’s largest buyer of energy, along with China”.
- Hitting back at Trump’s tariff move, India pointed out to the US imports from Russia. “Where the US is concerned, it continues to import from Russia uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, palladium for its EV industry, fertilisers as well as chemicals,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
- Citing this, New Delhi called Trump’s targeting of India “unjustified and unreasonable” and reiterated that the government would safeguard its national interests and economic security.
