India, UK Begin Mega Wargame in Indian Ocean
- The navies of India and the UK kick-started an eight-day mega wargame in the Western Indian Ocean in line with their focus to boost overall military ties.
- The UK’s Carrier Strike Group (CSG), led by HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier, has been deployed for the Exercise Konkan.
- The exercise is a reaffirmation of the shared commitment to ensuring secure, open and free seas and will exemplify the “comprehensive strategic partnership” outlined in the India-UK Vision 2035, the Indian Navy said.
- The exercise is aimed at increasing combined maritime and air capabilities between the UK and Indian navies on the high seas.
- The fourth edition of India and Australia’s bilateral military exercise ‘AUSTRAHIND 2025’ will be held from October 13 to 26 at Irwin Barracks in Perth, Australia.
- The joint exercise aims “to further strengthen the operational capabilities of both the armies in undertaking joint Company level operations in urban and semi-urban terrain, under the United Nations mandate reflecting the shared commitment towards global peace and security.”
- The exercise was started in 2022 in Rajasthan and has since then become an annual event, which is conducted alternatively in India and Australia.
India, Australia to ink 3 Pacts
- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will undertake a two-day visit to Australia beginning Thursday to explore “new and meaningful” initiatives to further expand bilateral defence and strategic ties.
- The two sides are set to ink three agreements during Singh’s visit that will provide for further boosting cooperation in the areas of information sharing, expanding maritime security ties and joint activities.
- India and Australia are also expected to carry out a detailed review of the current situation in the Indo-Pacific amid growing global concerns over China’s increasing military muscle-flexing in the region.
- India and Australia elevated their bilateral relationship from a strategic partnership to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) in 2020.
India Floats Tender for 6 AK-630 30mm Guns
- In a step towards providing protection to population centres and centres of faith close to the border with Pakistan, the Indian Army has issued a tender to buy six AK-630 30mm guns from a state-owned firm, which is being seen as one of the pillars of the Mission Sudarshan Chakra.
- The tender for buying the air defence system has been issued as part of lessons learnt during Operation Sindoor, where the Pakistan Army carried out direct attacks on civilians and religious buildings in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.
- Mission Sudarshan Chakra is India’s plan to create a comprehensive, multi-layered, indigenous security shield by 2035, integrating surveillance, cyber security, and air defence systems to protect key installations from various enemy attacks.
- “Indian Army Air Defence has floated an RFP for the procurement of six AK630 Air Defence Gun Systems* with Advanced Weapon and Equipment India Ltd (AWEIL). The system sought is a 30mm multi-barrel mobile air defence gun system with a high rate of fire”.
- The Gun systems will have a range of up upto 4km* with a cyclic rate of fire of up upto 3000 rounds per minute. Detection is achieved through an all-weather Electro-Optical Fire Control system.
Indian Navy Set to Commission Andorth
- The Indian Navy is set to commission Androth, the second Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), at a ceremonial event scheduled for Monday at the Visakhapatnam Naval Dockyard.
- The commissioning of Androth marks yet another milestone in the Indian Navy’s steady stride towards capability enhancement and indigenisation. The induction is part of a larger momentum that has seen several state-of-the-art warships join the naval fleet in recent months.
- Built by GRSE, Kolkata , Androth is a testimony to India’s growing maritime self-reliance with over 80 percent indigenous content . The ship underscores the Navy’s commitment to enhancing indigenous capability through innovative technologies and homegrown solutions.
- Together, these inductions in recent months — Arnala, Nistar, Udaygiri, Nilgiri, and now Androth — reflect the Navy’s balanced growth across the spectrum of maritime operations.
