Fence, Patrol Track Being Built Along Myanmar Border

  • Union home minister Amit Shah said the Modi government has decided to fence the entire 1,643-km India-Myanmar border. The move could virtually put an end to the Free Movement Regime prevalent along the porous border.
  • Shah said a 10-km stretch of the border at Moreh in Manipur has already been fenced. Furthermore, two pilot projects of fencing through a hybrid surveillance system are under execution. “They will fence a stretch of 1 km each in Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.
  • Additionally, fence works covering approximately 20 km in Manipur have also been approved, and the work will start soon,” he said.

IAF To Get Mid-air Refuellers, Signal Intelligence Aircraft

  • The air force is likely to get mid-air refuellers that are crucial force multipliers, with the ministry considering a ₹10,000 cr proposal to acquire six of the aircraft.
  • Plans to acquire three airborne intelligence gathering aircraft under a project that will see the development of indigenous sensor technologies and systems are also likely to move ahead.
  • Currently, the IAF operates a fleet of six Russian IIyushin-78 tankers procured in 2003-04, but at any given time only three to four are serviceable. Their maintenance and serviceability issues were also brought out in an August 2017 report of the Comptroller and Auditor General that studied their operations from 2010 to 2016. The tankers were bought in 2003-2004 at Rs 132 crore per aircraft.

China Says Its Research Ship Aims To Understand Indian Ocean

  • Beijing, China on Tuesday defended the increasing forays by its research vessels into the Indian Ocean as well to the Maldives, saying these were for peaceful purposes and aimed at contributing to humanity’s scientific understanding of the ocean.
  • The Maldives had on January 23 permitted China’s Xiang Yang Hong 03, equipped to carry research and surveys, to dock at Male port, saying the halt was for replenishment and that the research vessel would “not be conducting any research while in the Maldivian waters.”
  • The permission for the Chinese vessel to dock at Male port was given by the recently elected pro-China President Mohamed Muizzu.
  • The Indian defence establishment said New Delhi is keeping a close watch on the movement of the Chinese ship.

Retired Army Personnel-Turned-LET ‘Terrorist’ Held In Delhi

  • The Delhi Police has arrested an alleged member of Lashkar-e-Taiba module operating in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara, officials said on Tuesday. The accused, who is a retired army personnel, has played an instrumental role in receiving arms and ammunition from across the Line of Control (LoC), they said.
  • The accused, identified as Riyaz Ahmad Rather and is a resident of Kupwara district, was arrested on Sunday from New Delhi Railway Station, the police said.
  • Riyaz was havildar in Indian Army and retired last year, police said.
  • He was involved in hatching a conspiracy along with one Khursheed Ahmad Rather and Ghulam Sarwar Rather in receiving arms and ammunition from across the LoC by the terrorist handlers, a senior police officer said.

IIT Madras To Spearhead Development Of India’s First Indigenous 155mm Smart Ammunition

  • The IIT Madras has joined hands with Munitions India Limited, a key player in defence manufacturing, to create the nation’s first domestically designed 155 Smart Ammunition. This collaboration aims to enhance accuracy and lethality in defence operations, marking a crucial stride towards self-reliance in defence production.
  • IIT Madras and Munitions India Limited, under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, have embarked on a two-year initiative to develop advanced smart ammunition. The primary objective is to achieve a Circular Error Probable (CEP) of 10 meters, a significant improvement from the current 500 meters, thereby enhancing precision in defence operations.
  • The 155mm Indian Smart Ammunition is designed for compatibility with existing artillery guns, offering seamless integration without necessitating modifications. It boasts advanced features such as fin stabilization, canard control, and a 3-mode fuse operation, catering to various tactical requirements.

India To Get 3 New Spy Planes

  • In what would be a significant capability boost for defence forces, India is planning to develop three new spy planes that would be capable of keeping a close watch on enemy communications and carry out long-range surveillance missions.
  • The project would be carried out over indigenously and the majority of the technology and equipment to be used would be made in India.
  • The proposal for getting three new spy planes also known as signal intelligence and communication jamming system aircraft is at an advanced stage and is expected to get clearance in next week, defence officials told ANI.
  • The project is being carried out by the Centre for Airborne Studies which is working on multiple development projects including the Airborne Early Warning and Control systems which is the next generation of the existing Netra aircraft which would be the AEW&C Netra Mark1A.
