New Vice Chief of Army Staff and Major Army Reshuffle
The Indian Army will witness a significant leadership reshuffle starting 1 April, with several senior officers assuming important command positions.
Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, currently heading the Southern Command in Pune, will become the new Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS) at Army Headquarters. Commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986, Lt Gen Seth has served in numerous operational and administrative roles. Before leading Southern Command in July 2024, he commanded the Mathura-based XXI Strike Corps, a key offensive formation of the Indian Army.
The current Vice Chief, Lt Gen P.P. Singh, will take charge as the Western Army Commander at Chandimandir, replacing Lt Gen Manoj Kumar Katiyar. Western Command is strategically crucial as it oversees operations along the India–Pakistan border. Lt Gen Singh belongs to the Parachute Regiment (Special Forces) and will be among the rare Special Forces officers to head an Army Command.
Another important appointment involves Lt Gen V.M.B. Krishnan, who currently serves as Quartermaster General at Army Headquarters. From 1 April, he will lead the Eastern Command in Kolkata, responsible for security along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China and borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh. He will succeed Lt Gen Ram Chander Tiwari, who is set to retire later this month. Lt Gen Krishnan, an officer of the Dogra Regiment, previously commanded the XVII Corps, the Army’s mountain strike formation created for operations along the China frontier.
Meanwhile, Lt Gen Sandeep Jain, presently the Chief of Staff at Southern Command, will take over as the Southern Army Commander after Lt Gen Seth moves to Army Headquarters. Earlier in his career, Lt Gen Jain commanded the Ambala-based II Corps (Kharga Corps), an important strike formation deployed along the western front.
US Approves $151 Million Arms Sale to Israel
The United States State Department has approved a military package worth $151.8 million for Israel amid rising tensions in West Asia.
The deal includes the sale of approximately 12,000 bomb bodies weighing 1,000 pounds each, intended to strengthen Israel’s military preparedness. According to the US Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, the transfer is aimed at enhancing Israel’s ability to address present and emerging security challenges while strengthening its national defence capabilities.
The development comes as tensions escalate across the region. Israeli airstrikes have reportedly targeted locations in Iran and Lebanon, while US forces are believed to have attacked an Iranian drone carrier at sea. In response, Iran launched retaliatory strikes on neighbouring countries hosting US military bases.
The United Nations refugee agency has described the situation in West Asia as a serious humanitarian emergency, calling for urgent international assistance.
India Allows Iranian Naval Vessel to Dock in Kochi
India has permitted an Iranian naval vessel, IRIS Lavan, to dock at Kochi following a request from Iran citing technical issues.
This development comes shortly after the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena, a Moudge-class warship, was reportedly attacked by a US submarine about 40 nautical miles off the coast of Galle in Sri Lanka while returning from the MILAN multinational naval exercise. The vessel sank following the incident, and Sri Lankan authorities reported recovering dozens of casualties.
The IRIS Lavan had been operating in the region as part of the same naval activities. Iran formally requested India’s assistance on 28 February, asking for urgent docking permission. The request was approved on 1 March, and the ship arrived in Kochi on 4 March.
Currently, the vessel’s 183 crew members are being accommodated at Indian naval facilities in Kochi.
The incident has sparked political debate within India, with some opposition leaders questioning the government’s response to the sinking of the Iranian warship.
West Asia Conflict Could Impact Global Economy: Rajnath Singh
India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has warned that escalating tensions in West Asia could have serious consequences for the global economy and international trade.
Speaking at an event organised by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, Singh highlighted the strategic importance of maritime routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf. He noted that these regions play a crucial role in the global supply of oil and natural gas.
According to the Defence Minister, any instability in these waters could disrupt energy supplies and global supply chains, thereby affecting trade and economic stability worldwide.
Singh also emphasised that oceans are increasingly becoming central to geopolitical power dynamics. As a major maritime nation, India must strengthen its leadership role in maritime security and technological innovation to safeguard national interests.
CISF Celebrates 57th Raising Day
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) celebrated its 57th Raising Day with a ceremony held in Mundali, Odisha. The event was attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah as the chief guest.
During the ceremony, the Home Minister laid the foundation stone for three residential complexes of the CISF to be constructed in Kamrup, Nashik, and Sehore at a total cost of ₹890 crore. Additionally, two housing complexes located in Rajarhat and Delhi were inaugurated.
The CISF is a Central Armed Police Force functioning under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Its primary responsibility is to provide security to key public sector installations, airports, government infrastructure, and certain private institutions.
The force is headed by a Director General (DG) from the Indian Police Service (IPS) and operates through nine sectors, including airport security, regional sectors, training, and a dedicated fire service wing.
