Exercise Cold Start: Unified Drone Warfare Drill

In a significant development following Operation Sindoor, India’s Army, Navy, and Air Force are set to jointly participate in a large-scale drone and counter-drone warfare exercise, codenamed Exercise Cold Start.
The four-day exercise, to be conducted at Babina and Mhow military stations in Central India, marks a new era of inter-service collaboration in drone warfare operations. The event is being coordinated by the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) and aims to enhance joint capabilities in the emerging domain of unmanned and counter-unmanned technologies.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan, is expected to review the operations and assess the level of tri-service synergy achieved during the drill. The exercise underscores India’s increasing focus on preparing for modern warfare scenarios where drone and anti-drone tactics play a decisive role.

Andhra Pradesh Emerging as a Defence Manufacturing Powerhouse

Andhra Pradesh is fast positioning itself as a key player in India’s defence industrial growth. Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has announced plans to set up an integrated weapons and propellant manufacturing complex near Donakonda in Prakasam district.

With an investment of around ₹1,200 crore, the upcoming facility is expected to generate over 1,600 employment opportunities — including 600 direct and 1,000 indirect jobs. The state government has already approved the allocation of 1,346.67 acres of land for the project, combining state-owned property and new acquisitions.

The Donakonda facility will have the capability to produce rocket motors capable of carrying payloads up to 1,000 tons, significantly strengthening India’s indigenous missile and propulsion system production.

This project builds upon the momentum created by Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited (KSSL) — a subsidiary of Bharat Forge — which is investing ₹2,400 crore to develop a cutting-edge defence equipment manufacturing unit in Madakasira, Sri Sathya Sai district. Together, these investments are transforming Andhra Pradesh into a central hub for India’s self-reliant defence ecosystem.

Paras Defence Subsidiary Secures Major Anti-Drone Contract

In another boost to India’s indigenous defence capabilities, Paras Anti-Drone Technologies, a subsidiary of Paras Defence and Space Technologies Ltd, has been awarded a ₹46.19 crore contract by the Ministry of Defence.

The agreement involves the supply of Advanced Anti-Drone Systems, incorporating sophisticated drone detection, jamming, and neutralisation technologies designed to counter aerial threats across multiple frequency bands. The project is scheduled for completion by March 2026.

This order reinforces the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen counter-drone defences at strategic installations and border regions. Additionally, Paras Defence has also secured an international order worth $3.8 million (approximately ₹34 crore) from Elbit Security Systems, Israel, for the supply of Electro-Optic systems, further expanding its global footprint.

Indian Navy’s Strategic Moves Near Turkey

The Indian Navy has stepped up its presence in the Eastern Mediterranean and South Caucasus, signalling a strategic realignment aimed at countering Turkey’s growing regional influence. The decision follows heightened tensions after Operation Sindoor, during which Turkey deployed a warship to Karachi in support of Pakistan.

Since then, Indian naval forces have maintained a steady operational presence near Turkish waters — a move interpreted as both a deterrent and a message of strategic resilience. Ankara’s continued support to Pakistan, including the supply of Bayraktar TB-2 drones and military training, has further strained bilateral relations.

Adding to the tension, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s repeated remarks on Kashmir at international forums, including the United Nations, have widened the diplomatic divide.

India, in turn, is deepening cooperation with Turkey’s regional rivals — particularly Greece and Cyprus. The Indian Navy has strengthened interoperability with the Hellenic Navy through multiple PASSEX drills, including joint exercises with INS Tamal in August 2025 and INS Trikand in September 2025. These operations focused on anti-submarine warfare, night boarding manoeuvres, and coordinated gunnery exercises.

Meanwhile, Cyprus, which continues to oppose Turkey’s occupation of its northern region, has become an important partner in India’s evolving Mediterranean strategy — reflecting a broader policy of proactive engagement and strategic balancing.
