Exercise Brahmashira: Advancing Tri-Service Integration

As part of the broader Tri-Services Exercise Trishul, the Indian Army successfully conducted Exercise Brahmashira in the Rann and Creek Sector. This major operation brought together all three services—Army, Navy, and Air Force—alongside the Indian Coast Guard, Border Security Force (BSF), and civil administration. The exercise aimed to test and validate India’s integrated operational capabilities across land, air, and sea domains.

Reflecting the spirit of the Army’s “Decade of Transformation”, Brahmashira showcased the effectiveness of Joint Task Forces, a modern Joint Control Centre, and resilient infrastructure designed to support multi-domain warfare. It also emphasized the use of emerging technologies, joint communication systems, and the concept of Military-Civil Fusion, reinforcing India’s Whole-of-Nation approach to national defence.

Meanwhile, the Indian Army’s Southern Command continues to conduct a series of exercises under Exercise Trishul, promoting the core principles of JAI – Jointness, Atmanirbharta, and Innovation. In the Thar Desert, simultaneous exercises such as MaruJwala and Akhand Prahaar are being held to validate joint firepower, manoeuvrability, and combined arms operations in realistic battlefield environments.

Malabar Exercise 2025: Strengthening Indo-Pacific Partnerships

The navies of India, the United States, Australia, and Japan have commenced the annual Malabar Naval Exercise 2025 in the Northern Pacific Ocean near Guam. Hosted by the United States, this edition focuses on enhancing interoperability and maritime cooperation among the four Quad nations.

The Indian Navy has deployed the INS Sahyadri, a guided-missile frigate, for this mega event. The exercise includes a harbour phase followed by an intensive sea phase featuring joint fleet operations, anti-submarine warfare drills, aerial exercises, and gunnery serials. Conducted amid evolving geopolitical dynamics, Malabar 2025 highlights the growing cooperation among major Indo-Pacific democracies committed to ensuring a free, open, and secure maritime region.

Pakistan Navy Ship Visits Bangladesh After Five Decades

In a rare development, a Pakistan Navy warship docked at Bangladesh’s Chattogram Port for a four-day goodwill visit, marking the first such occurrence since 1971. This diplomatic engagement signals a notable thaw in Pakistan–Bangladesh relations after decades of limited contact.

Analysts view this visit as Pakistan’s attempt to reassert its naval presence in the Bay of Bengal, a region of strategic interest to both India and Myanmar. Despite several earlier attempts, Pakistan’s efforts to deepen economic and defence ties with Dhaka have largely remained unsuccessful. This visit, however, could indicate Islamabad’s renewed efforts to expand its regional footprint.

General Asim Munir to Become Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces

Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, General Syed Asim Munir, is reportedly poised for another elevation—his second promotion this year—as the government proposes creating the post of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) under the 27th Constitutional Amendment.

The new post would establish a unified military command overseeing the Army, Navy, and Air Force—similar to India’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) system. Earlier in May, following heightened tensions with India, Munir was promoted to the ceremonial rank of Field Marshal, the highest in Pakistan’s military hierarchy.

If enacted, the amendment would modify Article 243 of the Pakistani Constitution, authorizing the President to appoint both the Army Chief and the CDF based on the Prime Minister’s advice. This move is expected to significantly strengthen Munir’s influence over Pakistan’s defence establishment.

India to Lease Russia’s Stealth Nuclear Submarines

India is set to lease Russian Akula-class nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs) as part of a strategic measure to address gaps in its underwater warfare capabilities. This leasing arrangement—an extension of the long-standing Indo-Russian naval cooperation—helps India train its crews, gain operational expertise, and maintain readiness until indigenous SSN and SSBN projects reach maturity.

The latest submarine under the deal, INS Chakra-III (K-519 Iribis), was contracted for $3 billion in 2019 and was initially expected to join the Indian Navy by 2025. However, its induction has been delayed until 2028 due to technical challenges, the Russia–Ukraine conflict, and Western sanctions impacting Russian shipyards.

Originally laid down at the Amur Shipyard in 1994, the K-519 Iribis was mothballed during Russia’s post-Soviet economic crisis. Now undergoing extensive modernization, it will significantly boost India’s underwater combat readiness once delivered, reinforcing deterrence capabilities against both China and Pakistan in the Indian Ocean Region.
