India–Russia Collaboration: Joint Production of Il-114 Aircraft

India and Russia have begun preliminary discussions to jointly manufacture the Il-114 regional turboprop aircraft in India. This initiative represents a fresh chapter in the long-standing defence and aviation partnership shared by both nations.

The talks took place during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s first visit to India in four years, signalling renewed strategic engagement between the two sides.

The Il-114, designed for regional and short-haul operations, has emerged as a potential candidate for local production. Russia’s state corporation ROSTEC has confirmed that technical and commercial assessments are presently in progress to evaluate the feasibility of manufacturing the aircraft within India.

The move aligns with India’s broader vision of enhancing aerospace industrial capabilities through joint production, technology transfer, and expansion of high-value strategic sectors.

Key Specifications of the Il-114:

  • Twin-engine turboprop airliner
  • First flight: 29 March 1990
  • Engine: Klimov TV7-117
  • Maximum speed: 500 km/h
  • Cruise speed: 470 km/h
  • Range: Around 1,000 km
  • Length: 27 m
  • Built by: Ilyushin and Tashkent Mechanical Plant

Tata and Lockheed Martin Launch New MRO Facility for C-130J Fleet

In a major boost to the Indian Air Force’s logistics and maintenance ecosystem, Tata Advanced Systems and Lockheed Martin have announced a new Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Bengaluru. This dedicated centre will support India’s fleet of C-130J Super Hercules aircraft.

The C-130J is one of the IAF’s most versatile tactical airlifters, with 12 aircraft currently in service. It has repeatedly demonstrated its operational excellence, especially during high-altitude missions in regions such as Daulat Beg Oldi and Nyoma in eastern Ladakh.

The upcoming MRO facility is expected to transform India’s maintenance capabilities by offering:

  • Heavy servicing and periodic overhauls
  • Component-level repairs
  • Structural restoration
  • Avionics upgrades
  • Advanced testing capabilities

Additionally, the facility will open new avenues for training Indian engineers and expanding local industry participation in the global C-130 supply chain.

BrahMos-II: India’s Leap Toward Hypersonic Missile Technology

India’s hypersonic missile programme is set to cross a crucial milestone with the scheduled first flight test of BrahMos-II in 2027–2028. The test aims to validate the missile’s capability to reach and sustain speeds of up to Mach 8, placing India among global leaders in hypersonic weapons technology.

A key objective of the upcoming test is to verify the scramjet engine, which enables efficient combustion at extreme velocities due to supersonic airflow. Ensuring stable engine performance at cruise conditions is essential to achieve sustained hypersonic flight.

The test will also focus on evaluating:

  • High-speed guidance accuracy
  • Navigation reliability
  • Aerodynamic stability
  • Targeting precision under intense thermal and structural stress

Successful validation will mark a significant technological advancement for India’s strategic strike capabilities.

Russia’s Offer of Kalibr-PL: Boosting India’s Submarine Strike Power

Russia has proposed supplying India with the 3M-14E Kalibr-PL, a submarine-launched land-attack cruise missile with a range of approximately 1,500 km. This offer has major strategic implications for India’s naval posture in the Indian Ocean.

The Kalibr-PL is known for its long-range precision strike ability and would significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s capability to hit land targets from underwater platforms. Its integration is compatible with India’s existing submarine classes, including:

  • Kilo-class (Sindhughosh-class)
  • Scorpene-class (Kalvari-class)

This makes the missile an ideal interim solution as India continues to develop its indigenous submarine-launched cruise missile under Project 75-Alpha and future SSN programmes. The introduction of Kalibr-PL would allow Indian submarines to execute deep-strike missions similar to surface vessels armed with BrahMos, thus strengthening India’s two-front maritime strike capability.

The broader infrastructure projects linked with naval expansion also support mobility, logistics, economic activity, and international defence cooperation through exercises such as Malabar, Varuna, and Milan.

Oman Transfers 20 Jaguar Aircraft to India for Spares

To support the longevity of its Jaguar strike aircraft fleet, the Indian Air Force is set to receive over 20 retired Jaguar jets from Oman. These aircraft will be dismantled and used exclusively for spare parts, helping India address shortages arising from the closure of global Jaguar production lines.

The IAF continues to operate six Jaguar squadrons, each comprising 18–20 aircraft, making the availability of spares essential for maintaining operational readiness. With many nations having phased out their Jaguar fleets, India remains one of the few countries still flying this iconic Anglo-French aircraft.

Oman’s transfer reinforces strong bilateral defence ties and follows earlier acquisitions of retired Jaguars from France, the UK, and Oman itself.

The Jaguar’s combat legacy includes notable missions during the 1999 Kargil conflict, after which the aircraft underwent multiple upgrades to keep them combat-capable. The latest supply of spares will ensure that India’s Jaguars remain relevant until their eventual replacement.
