PM Modi’s Malaysia Visit Strengthens Strategic Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day official visit to Malaysia has given fresh impetus to turning the upgraded Comprehensive Strategic Partnership into tangible outcomes. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim termed his talks with PM Modi as highly significant, underlining their strategic importance for the future of bilateral ties. Recalling the elevation of relations in 2024, Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed the shared resolve to swiftly implement agreed decisions.

PM Modi described India–Malaysia relations as “special”, pointing to strong maritime cooperation, centuries-old cultural connections, and shared democratic principles. He reiterated India’s firm position on counter-terrorism, stressing that there can be no double standards or compromises in addressing the global menace.

Delegation-level discussions held in Kuala Lumpur culminated in the exchange of 11 agreements aimed at expanding cooperation across multiple sectors. These included audio-visual co-production, disaster management, anti-corruption measures, UN peacekeeping collaboration, semiconductor development, the International Big Cats Alliance, social security coordination, vocational education and training, national security cooperation, and health and medical collaboration.

Sagar Defence Backs Indigenous Drone Innovation

Sagar Defence Engineering (SDE) has made a strategic investment in Endure Air Systems, a Kanpur-based start-up specialising in unmanned aerial systems. The move highlights SDE’s expanding focus on advanced defence technologies and reflects a broader trend of Indian defence firms supporting domestic innovation through equity participation.

By acquiring a stake in Endure Air Systems, SDE aims to integrate the start-up’s drone platforms into its long-term vision of scalable, mission-ready aerial solutions suitable for both defence and civilian use. Endure Air Systems is known for developing lightweight and easily deployable drone systems that prioritise operational efficiency and low maintenance costs.

The company’s expertise spans hardware design, avionics integration, and software development, allowing it to offer comprehensive solutions for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. The investment is expected to help Endure Air Systems expand manufacturing, speed up certification processes, and widen its market reach within India and abroad.

US Trade Map Sparks Attention with Undivided India Depiction

A recent post by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) announcing a new India–US trade agreement drew unexpected attention due to the map used alongside it. The map showed India as a single, undivided entity, including the entire region of Jammu and Kashmir without marking areas administered by Pakistan or China.

This portrayal marked a noticeable shift from the usual US cartographic practice, which typically uses dotted lines or disclaimers to indicate disputed boundaries. Social media users quickly noted the diplomatic significance of the depiction, with some arguing that the map carried greater symbolic weight than the trade details mentioned.

Historically, the United States has maintained formal neutrality on the Kashmir issue. Past inconsistencies, including a controversial State Department map under its “Diplomacy in Action” section, had triggered strong protests from India. In 2012, the Ministry of External Affairs firmly rejected such representations, calling them incorrect and inconsistent with India’s sovereignty. Following sustained diplomatic engagement, the US later revised its approach by marking the Line of Control with dotted lines. The latest USTR map, however, omitted such indicators, leading to speculation despite the absence of any official policy statement.

US Alleges China’s Secret Nuclear Test After Galwan Clash

The United States has accused China of conducting a covert nuclear explosive test in June 2020, shortly after the deadly Galwan Valley clash in eastern Ladakh. The confrontation resulted in the loss of 20 Indian soldiers, with intelligence reports suggesting significant Chinese casualties as well.

The allegation was revealed at an international disarmament forum by U.S. Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, Thomas DiNanno. He claimed that Washington has evidence indicating China carried out nuclear explosive tests, including one on 22 June 2020, with preparations for yields reaching hundreds of tons. According to him, China allegedly used “decoupling” techniques to reduce seismic detection, potentially violating global test ban norms.

China rejected the accusations, with its ambassador to disarmament, Shen Jian, asserting that Beijing has consistently acted responsibly in nuclear matters. He countered by accusing the US of exaggerating China’s nuclear capabilities to justify its own arms expansion, placing the blame for rising global nuclear tensions on Washington.

Government Moves to Procure 30 Low-Level Light-Weight Radars

India has initiated the procurement process for 30 Low-Level Light-Weight Radars (LLLRs) to enhance the Army’s air defence surveillance capabilities. A Request for Proposal (RFP) has been issued under the fast-track procurement route, signalling urgency in strengthening aerial threat detection.

According to the RFP uploaded on the Indian Army’s website, the defence ministry plans to acquire 30 LLLR (Improved) systems along with two classroom variants under the “Buy (Indian)” category, at an estimated cost of around ₹725 crore. The radars are designed to provide continuous three-dimensional surveillance of both friendly and hostile aerial targets.

The system is expected to detect a wide range of aerial threats up to a distance of 50 kilometres, with extensive elevation coverage. Once inducted, these radars will significantly improve situational awareness and reinforce India’s layered air defence architecture.
