India Issues Notam For Missile Test

  • India has issued Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) that announce the closure of airspace for missile testing activities in December 2023. These NOTAMs indicate potential tests of possibly an Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile system.
  • The missile test is scheduled between 12 December 2023 and 13 December 2023.
  • A NOTAM is a formal communication used in aviation to disseminate information about events or developments that could affect flight safety.
  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) recently successfully carried out a night trial launch of a Medium-Range Ballistic Missile, Agni-I from Integrated Test Range, Chandipur off the Odisha coast on 8th December 2023.
  • The no-fly zone suggests that the missile to be tested could fly to a distance of 1000 kilometres.

Indian Navy Conducts Bi-annual “Ex Prasthan”        

  • The Indian Navy conducted a bi-annual exercise called Prasthan in the Western Offshore Development Area off Mumbai, according to the Ministry of Defence press release.
  • The exercise is conducted under the Western Naval Command and is conducted every six months to validate measures and procedures to address various contingencies that may arise in the oil production platforms.
  • The current exercise was conducted on the R12A (Ratna) platform of ONGC, located about 45 nm West of Mumbai Harbour.

Italy Wins Admiral’s Cup 2023

  • The 12th edition of ‘Admiral’s Cup’ Sailing Regatta concluded on 08 Dec 23 with a glittering closing ceremony at Ettikulam Beach at Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala. Team Italy represented by Midshipman Avallone Antonio & Midshipman Creati Carlo Leonardo won the Admiral’s Cup 23.
  • Team India represented by Midshipman PPK Reddy and Cadet GY Reddy was the Runners-Up and Team United Kingdom & Germany represented by Officer Cadet Lucy Bell and Midshipman Aaron Middleton from United Kingdom and Cadet Beckman Carl & Cadet Hinz Anton from Germany shared the third position.

First LCA Mark1A Fighter Aircraft Squadron To Be Deployed At Nal Air Base

  • The Indian Air Force is planning to raise the first squadron of the indigenous LCA Mark1A fighter aircraft squadron at the Nal air base in Bikaner district of Rajasthan near the Pakistan front.
  • The aircraft, which would be much more advanced than the existing LCA Mark1 Tejas fighters, are being equipped with the latest indigenous radars and avionics.
  • The first LCA Mark1A aircraft is expected to be delivered to the Indian Air Force by February-March time frame by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, they said.
  • The LCA Mark1A fighter jets are now planned to be produced in large numbers as 83 aircraft are already under production and 97 more have been cleared by the central government.
  • Along with the 40 LCA Mark-1 Tejas fighters, a total of 220 LCA Mark 1 and LCA Mark1A aircraft are planned to be inducted into service in the next 8-10 years.

Navy Has Shortage Of 10,896 Personnel: Govt

  • The Indian Navy is reeling under a shortage of 10,896 personnel including 1,777 officers, according to details provided by the defence ministry in Parliament on Friday. Responding to a question in Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt also said 9,119 posts of sailors are lying vacant in the Navy as on October 31. He said the shortage in the officer-rank is 1,777.
  • The sanctioned strength of officers and sailors in the Navy is 11,979 and 76,649.
  • Bhatt said a total of 323 officers were recruited in 2021 while the number in 2022 was 386.
  • In 2021, 5,547 sailors were inducted into the Navy. The number in 2022 was 5,171, he added. To a separate question, he said a technology development fund to provide financial assistance to Indian industries, startups as well as academic and scientific institutions for the development of defence and dual use technologies.

INS Sumedha Marks Maiden Entry By Indian Navy At Port Lamu

  • Indian Naval Ship Sumedha arrived at Port Lamu in Kenya as part of India’s ongoing long-range deployment to Africa in resonance with the SAGAR vision, the Ministry of Defence said in a press release.
  • The visit marks the maiden port call by any Indian Naval Ship at the recently developed Port in Kenya. During the port call, personnel from both navies will engage in a wide range of professional interactions, deck visits and sporting exchanges, aimed at enhancing cooperation and exchanging best practices.
  • Indian Naval ships are regularly deployed overseas as part of Indian Navy’s mission of building ‘bridges of friendship’ and strengthening international cooperation with friendly countries. The visit is in consonance with the Prime Minister’s vision of Security And Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) and seeks to further Indo-African ties.

CDS Gen Anil Chauhan Leaves For Japan

  • Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan left for Japan to hold talks with its top military brass on a host of issues including the situation in the South China Sea and ways to boost overall maritime security cooperation against the backdrop of China’s increasing military muscle-flexing in the strategic waters.
  • During Gen Chauhan’s visit, both sides will also explore ways to expand defence industrial cooperation and to share new technologies, officials said.
  • The defence ministry said the aim of the visit is to further reinforce the robust defence ties between the two nations and that it underscores the growing importance of India-Japan defence cooperation. It is expected that the respective situation in the South China Sea and East China Sea will be reviewed in talks between Gen Chauhan and his Japanese interlocutors in Tokyo.
