R-37M Missile Integration With Su-30MKI: A Major Boost to Air Superiority

India and Russia are close to finalising a major agreement to modernise nearly 100 aircraft from the Su-30MKI fleet. This upgrade programme is expected to substantially enhance the capabilities of the Indian Air Force’s primary air superiority fighter.

A key component of this modernisation is the integration of the R-37M ‘Axehead’ air-to-air missile, one of the world’s longest-range BVR (Beyond Visual Range) missiles. Known for its extended engagement capability, the R-37M enables the Su-30MKI to strike airborne threats at distances far beyond what older missile systems could achieve.

The missile is especially effective against high-value airborne assets such as:

  • AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control Systems)
  • Aerial refuelling tankers

By bringing these platforms within India’s strike range, the upgrade significantly strengthens the nation’s air dominance and improves its long-range deterrence posture.

‘Vrishabh’ Unmanned Ground Vehicle: India’s New Step Toward Robotic Warfare

Bhairav Robotics, a company associated with Zen Technologies, is advancing the development of the Vrishabh Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV)—an indigenous platform designed to undertake multiple military roles while reducing risks to soldiers.

The Vrishabh UGV stands out due to its highly modular and electric-powered architecture, allowing quick adaptation to a wide range of missions. Depending on operational needs, the platform can be configured for:

  • Surveillance and reconnaissance
  • Tactical logistics
  • Combat support
  • On-ground threat engagement

One of its most vital applications lies in last-mile logistics, particularly in high-risk zones where movement of ammunition, supplies, and equipment can expose personnel to danger. By automating such tasks, the Vrishabh UGV aims to reduce casualties and improve operational efficiency.

DRDO Saves Over ₹2.64 Lakh Crore Through Indigenous Innovations

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) continues to play a critical role in India’s journey toward defence self-reliance. A recent report by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence highlighted that DRDO’s indigenous research initiatives have saved the nation ₹2,64,156 crore over the past five years.

The committee also noted major achievements in cutting-edge fields, including:

  • Development of next-generation hypersonic technologies
  • Breakthroughs in advanced missile systems
  • Successful testing of Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS)
  • Validation trials of the Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM)

Additionally, the Committee reported that India currently has more than 33 lakh defence pensioners, and the digital pension management system SPARSH (System for Pension Administration – Raksha) is being actively implemented to streamline sanctioning and disbursement processes.

DRDO Hands Over Seven New Technologies to India’s Armed Forces

In another notable development, the DRDO transferred seven indigenous technologies to the Indian armed forces under the Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme. These technologies encompass a wide range of applications vital for modern warfare and defence infrastructure.

The handed-over technologies include:

  • Long-life seawater battery system for underwater surveillance
  • Tide-efficient gangway system for naval jetties
  • VLF-HF switching matrix systems
  • VLF loop aerials for underwater platforms
  • High-voltage power supply for airborne self-protection jammers
  • Indigenous waterjet propulsion system for fast interceptor craft
  • A novel process for recovering lithium precursors from used lithium-ion batteries

These innovations reflect India’s growing capacity to supply advanced defence solutions domestically, reducing dependence on foreign technologies and supporting the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat in the defence sector.
