Amit Shah Launches National IED Data Management System
Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the National IED Data Management System (NIDMS) through video conferencing, marking a significant step towards strengthening India’s counter-terrorism and investigation framework. The newly launched platform is a two-way, integrated digital system designed to support agencies dealing with explosives and terror-related incidents.
The system will be accessible to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), state Anti-Terrorism Squads (ATS), state police forces, and Central Armed Police Forces. Any information related to blasts or improvised explosive device (IED) incidents across the country can be uploaded and analysed through this centralized platform.
According to the Home Minister, the database will assist investigating agencies by providing valuable insights, patterns, and technical guidance, enabling faster and more accurate investigations. He emphasized that NIDMS would play a crucial role in tracking terror networks, analysing explosion trends, and helping authorities formulate effective counter-terror strategies nationwide.
DRDO Conducts Major Ground Test of Scramjet Engine for Hypersonic Missiles
India has achieved a major technological breakthrough in hypersonic missile development with the successful long-duration ground test of an actively cooled scramjet combustor conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The test was carried out by the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), a Hyderabad-based DRDO facility, at its advanced Scramjet Connect Pipe Test (SCPT) Facility. The scramjet engine operated continuously for more than 12 minutes, marking a landmark achievement in hypersonic propulsion technology.
Hypersonic cruise missiles powered by scramjet engines are capable of sustaining speeds exceeding Mach 5, or over 6,100 kmph, for extended durations. The Defence Ministry described the test as a path-breaking milestone, bringing India closer to deploying next-generation hypersonic weapon systems with enhanced speed, range, and survivability.
India and France Move Closer to Major Rafale Fighter Jet Deal
India and France are reportedly nearing a large fighter aircraft deal as the Indian Air Force (IAF) seeks to bridge its growing operational gaps. The discussions are expected to gain momentum ahead of French President Emmanuel Macron’s upcoming visit to India.
The IAF has already submitted a proposal to procure additional Rafale fighter jets under a government-to-government arrangement, with a strong emphasis on manufacturing in India. Although the exact number of jets is still under deliberation, the air force has projected a requirement of at least 114 modern combat aircraft.
The prolonged delay in the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) programme, pending for nearly eight years, has worsened the IAF’s squadron strength, which currently stands at 31 squadrons and is expected to drop to 29 following the retirement of MiG-21 aircraft. This is significantly below the authorised strength of 42.5 squadrons, considered essential to counter a potential two-front threat from China and Pakistan. Concerns have intensified as China prepares to supply Pakistan with J-35A fifth-generation stealth fighters.
Lockheed Martin Considers Setting Up C-130J Assembly Line in India
American defence major Lockheed Martin is exploring the possibility of establishing its first C-130J Super Hercules final assembly line outside the United States, with India as the proposed location. Senior company executives indicated that the facility could eventually evolve into a global manufacturing hub for the aircraft.
So far, Lockheed Martin has delivered over 560 C-130J aircraft worldwide, accumulating more than three million flight hours across 23 countries. The Indian Air Force currently operates 12 C-130J Super Hercules aircraft.
In addition to the standard transport variant, the C-130J platform is available in multiple specialised configurations capable of performing intelligence gathering, electronic warfare, special operations, search and rescue, and command missions. Apart from India, other Quad nations — the United States, Australia, and Japan — also operate this versatile aircraft.
The development aligns with the IAF’s 2022 Request for Information (RFI) for new Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) to replace its ageing AN-32 and IL-76 fleets.
Chinese, Russian and Iranian Warships Participate in Naval Drills Near South Africa
Warships from China, Russia, and Iran have entered South African waters to take part in a week-long naval exercise off the coast of Cape Town, reflecting growing military cooperation amid heightened global geopolitical tensions.
The drills, initiated under the BRICS framework, aim to enhance cooperation in maritime security, anti-piracy operations, and naval coordination. China, Russia, and South Africa are long-standing BRICS members, while Iran joined the grouping in 2024.
The exercises are being conducted near Simon’s Town, home to South Africa’s principal naval base, strategically located where the Indian Ocean meets the Atlantic Ocean. Chinese naval assets participating in the drills include the Tangshan, a 161-metre-long destroyer-class warship.
While it remains unclear whether other BRICS nations such as Brazil, India, or the UAE are participating, South African defence officials stated that the drills will continue until next week. The exercises have drawn global attention due to Iran’s participation amid domestic unrest and ongoing international political tensions.
