Defence Current Affairs 10 September 2025
Exercise Zapad 2025
- An Indian Armed Forces contingent comprising 65 personnel departed on Tuesday for the Mulino Training Ground, Nizhniy, Russia, to participate in the multilateral joint military exercise ZAPAD 2025, scheduled to be conducted from September 10 to 16, 2025.
- The contingent comprises 57 Indian Army personnel along with seven personnel from the Indian Air Force and one from the Indian Navy. The Indian Army contingent is being led by a battalion of the KUMAON Regiment along with troops from other arms and services.
- Exercise ZAPAD 2025 is designed to enhance military cooperation and interoperability among participating nations. The drills will provide a platform for exchanging tactics, techniques and procedures, particularly in conventional warfare and counter-terrorism operations.
- The focus will be on joint company-level operations in open terrain, involving mission planning, tactical drills and use of specialised arms skills. The exercise also aims to integrate emerging technologies and improve the ability of forces to operate in a multinational environment.
Army, Navy conducted High-Altitude Combat Diving Training
- A joint Scuba and Combat Diving Exercise was conducted by the Indian Army PARA (Special Forces) and the Indian Navy MARINE COMMANDOS (MARCOS) in Sikkim at an altitude of 17,000 feet, from 30 August to 5 September.
- During the training, participants carried out open circuit air diving, closed circuit pure oxygen diving, dives up to a depth of 17 metres in extreme cold-water conditions, and combat night diving.
- The high-altitude environment added unique challenges, reinforcing operational readiness and expanding the limits of combat diving capability.
Nepal PM KP Oli Resigns
- Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has resigned following two days of violent anti-corruption protests that engulfed Kathmandu, the capital, killing 19 people. The protests, largely led by Nepal’s youth under the banner of the “Gen Z protest,” initially erupted over a government ban on social media apps and deep-rooted grievances about corruption, unemployment, and governance failures.
- Demonstrators demanded Oli’s resignation, accusing his government of widespread corruption and misrule. The intensity of the protests escalated after security forces opened fire on demonstrators attempting to storm the parliament, leading to multiple fatalities.
- During the unrest, protesters employed slogans like “KP Chor, Desh Chhod” (KP thief, quit the country) and staged acts of vandalism and arson, including setting fire to the Nepal Parliament and the residences of political leaders such as PM Oli and former ministers. The government had initially imposed a ban on 26 social media platforms for failure to register in Nepal, which intensified public anger. After the outbreak of violence and deaths, the ban was lifted late Monday night in an apparent attempt to ease tensions
- PM Oli expressed deep sorrow over the deaths and condemned the violent turn of events, attributing the chaos to “infiltrating vested interests” that hijacked what he described as a peaceful protest. He announced the formation of a high-level inquiry commission to investigate the incidents and announced that those affected would be offered financial relief and free treatment.
- Despite calls for his resignation from multiple political quarters, including key leaders of the Nepali Congress party and the protest movement, PM Oli initially resisted stepping down.
Israel Strikes Terror Group Hamas Leadership In Qatar
- Israel has confirmed for the first time that it carried out a direct strike against key Hamas leaders sheltered in Doha, Qatar, marking an unprecedented escalation in the nearly year-long war that began with Hamas’s October 7 attacks.
- The Israel Defence Forces (IDF), in coordination with Shin Bet and the Israeli Air Force, announced that a precision operation was conducted against senior figures of Hamas’s political and operational bureau residing in the Qatari capital.
- While Israel’s official statement refrained from naming Qatar directly, regional officials and eyewitness reports noted multiple explosions in Doha just hours before, strongly indicating that the strikes were targeted at Hamas leaders long known to be based there.
- According to the IDF’s statement, those hit in the operation represented the uppermost echelon of Hamas leadership, individuals directly responsible for planning, orchestrating, and overseeing both the October 7 massacre and the subsequent war against Israel.
- Israeli officials described this cohort as the strategic core of Hamas’s command structure and held them accountable for not only authorising the cross-border assaults that left 1,200 Israelis and foreigners dead but also for the capture of 252 hostages, of whom only 48 remain, with fewer than half believed still alive.
GTRE Successfully Conducts Kaveri Dry Engine Test
- The transformation of India’s indigenous Kaveri jet engine program represents one of the most significant pivots in the country’s aerospace development history. After decades of struggling to power manned fighters, the Kaveri Derivative Engine (KDE) has found new purpose as the propulsion system for India’s stealth unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) platform, marking a critical milestone in achieving indigenous defence capabilities.
- The Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) has achieved a significant milestone by successfully conducting a performance test of the Kaveri Dry Engine (KDE) with unrestricted throttle movement. This important test demonstrated the engine’s ability to operate smoothly across its full throttle range without restrictions, a critical factor for ensuring responsive and reliable thrust control required in active flight operations.
- The KDE, which is a dry (non-afterburning) derivative of the indigenous Kaveri turbofan engine, is designed to produce approximately 46 to 49 kN of dry thrust. Recent developments and tests show the engine now approaches the upper end of this range, with ground trials confirming thrust outputs close to 49-50 kN.
- The unrestricted throttle test validates that the engine’s control and fuel delivery systems can maintain stable combustion and performance across all throttle settings, enhancing operational flexibility for various flight conditions.
