India’s Strategic Offer of Akash Missile To UAE

  • India’s recent offer of the indigenous Akash air defence missile system to the United Arab Emirates represents a significant development in the growing defence relationship between the two nations.
  • This offer, made during high-level diplomatic meetings, highlights India’s expanding capabilities as a defence exporter and signals a new chapter in India-UAE strategic partnership.
  • The Akash missile system, with its proven capabilities against aerial threats, stands as a testament to India’s indigenous defence manufacturing prowess and could potentially transform the air defence capabilities of the UAE.
  • Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), the Akash system is approximately 96% indigenously produced, marking it as a true “Made in India” defence product.
  • The system possesses an interception range of 25 kilometers and can effectively neutralize various aerial threats including fighter aircraft, helicopters, drones, cruise missiles, and even ballistic missiles.
  • The Akash missile offer exists within a broader framework of expanding defence cooperation between India and the UAE.

BSF to Undertake Mega IED Detection Drive

  • The BSF will undertake an anti-IED sweep along hundreds of kilometres of the India-Pakistan border in Punjab following the first-time recovery of such bombs leading to one jawan being injured.
  • The force also recently shifted the jurisdiction of about 20.3 kilometres from the total 553 kilometres under its Punjab frontier, headquartered in Jalandhar, to the neighbouring Jammu frontier for “better security coordination” in the riverine areas that run along Pathankot in Punjab.
  • The 2,289-kilometre-long India-Pakistan international border runs from Jammu in the north to Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat in the west and the Border Security Force (BSF) is tasked with guarding it.
  • Its Jammu frontier guards 191.66 kilometres of the international border, apart from 40 kilometres of the Line of Control (LoC) along Jammu and Kashmir.
  • About 70 per cent of the 532 kilometres of the international border in Punjab is cultivable and visited by farmers for tilling of the land, according to the officials.
  • More than 200 drones were seized by the BSF from the Punjab border last year while the number of such seizures was 107 in 2023.
  • About 60 drones have been seized this year.

Tahawwur Rana, 26/11 mastermind, lands in India

  • Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana on Thursday landed in New Delhi on a special aircraft after the US extradited the 26/11 Mumbai attack ‘mastermind’ to India.
  • A multi-agency team from India had gone to the US to complete all paperwork and legalities with US authorities.
  • Rana, 64, is facing serious charges related to the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks that resulted in the deaths of 166 people, including six Americans. The attacks in Mumbai involved 10 Pakistani terrorists who carried out a more than 60-hour siege, attacking key locations and causing widespread devastation.
  • The significant development in the extradition case of Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin, comes just days after his last-ditch effort to evade extradition to India was rejected by the US Supreme Court.
  • Rana is associated with Pakistani-American terrorist David Coleman Headley, one of the main conspirators behind the 26/11 attacks.

CBI Books 15 officers of Defence Ministry Unit In 11 Corruption Cases

  • The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered 11 corruption cases against 15 officers of the Pay and Accounts (ORS) section at the Artillery/Army Aviation Centre (AAC) in Nashik, which operates under the Ministry of Defence’s Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA).
  • The officers are accused of demanding and accepting bribes—often through middlemen—from army personnel in return for disbursing allowances and entitlements.
  • The alleged offences came to light during a Joint Surprise Check carried out on November 13, 2024, at the Nashik-based office, conducted in the presence of independent witnesses and officers from the Principal Controller of Defence Accounts (Army), Pune.
  • The Pune team had been deputed by the CGDA’s vigilance wing in New Delhi.

India’s Armed Forces Turn to Quantum Technology for Cyber Defence

  • India’s military is preparing for a major shift in how it approaches cyber operations– one that centres on the adoption of quantum technologies. These include quantum computing, communication, and sensing, which are moving from research labs into real-world defence applications.
  • Just last month, on 26 March 2025, a significant seminar titled “Quantum Technology: Impact on Future Wars and Way Forward” was held in Pune by Headquarters Southern Command, highlighting India’s commitment to quantum technology.
  • Quantum technology is based on the strange but powerful rules of quantum mechanics. In this world, particles can exist in multiple states at once (a concept known as superposition) and can be linked across distances (entanglement), influencing each other instantly.
  • Quantum capabilities also introduce new dynamics into cyber operations:
  • Side-Channel Threats: Quantum sensors may be able to pick up electromagnetic signals from devices — revealing clues about their activity or the data they handle.
