Rajnath Singh calls on Russian President Mr Vladimir Putin
• Rajnath Singh called on the President of the Russian Federation Mr Vladimir Putin in Moscow on December 10, 2024, on the margins of the 21st session of India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military and Military Cooperation (IRIGC-M&MTC).
• Shri Rajnath Singh discussed various issues of bilateral defence cooperation. Both leaders expressed that partnership between both countries holds immense potential and combined efforts will pave way for remarkable outcomes.
• During the meeting, Shri Rajnath Singh said “Friendship between our countries is higher than the highest mountain and deeper than the deepest ocean.” India has always stood by its Russian friends and will continue to do so in future, he added.
• He says, “India will always be with Russian colleagues despite Geopolitical challenges & ‘Enormous pressure’ on New Delhi.”
21st Session of India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military & Military Technical Cooperation
• The 21st session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military & Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-M&MTC) was co-chaired by Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh and Russian Defence Minister Mr. Andrey Belousov in Moscow on December 10, 2024.
• Shri Rajnath Singh voiced the Government of India’s determination to extend the capabilities of its domestic defence industry across domains and industrial collaboration.
• He stressed on new opportunities for enhancing participation of Russian industries in the ‘Make in India’ projects. He reiterated India’s commitment towards Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership with Russia.
• Shri Rajnath Singh invited Minister Belousov to visit India to co-chair the 22nd session of IRIGC-M&MTC in 2025. The invitation was accepted.
UK Government Indicated It Could Consider Lifting The Ban on HTS
• The UK government indicated on Monday that it could consider lifting the ban on Islamist militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which has toppled the Assad regime in Syria, if the group delivers on its promises like protecting the minorities and people’s rights.
• HTS has been proscribed in the UK as a terrorist organisation since 2017 owing to its original links with al-Qaeda. Any association or support to HTS is a criminal offence in the UK.
• Though HTS has its origins in al-Qaeda, it claims to have severed its ties with the latter.
BEML Gets order for 50-tonne Trailer from Defence Ministry
• State-owned BEML Limited said it has secured a contract from the defence ministry to supply a 50-tonne Trailer valued at Rs 83.51 crore.
• The order highlights BEML’s strength and capability in delivering advanced, indigenous products to enhance India’s defence infrastructure, the public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.
• The heavy-duty Trailer is specifically designed for the transportation of battle tanks and features 12 twin wheels for durability and stability in challenging terrains.
• With a payload capacity of 50 tonnes, the Trailer is engineered to be towed by the BEML HMV 8×8 vehicle, BEML said.
• Notably, it includes advanced features like a steerable turntable for 55-degree rotation in both directions, a twin-line air brake system, emergency brakes, and mechanically operated parking brakes, it added.
• BEML operates in three verticals — defence and aerospace, mining and construction and rail and metro. It has manufacturing facilities located in Bangalore, Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), Mysore, and Palakkad, with R&D infrastructure and a nationwide network of sales and services.
Taiwan Reports Continued Surge In Chinese Military Activity
• Taiwan’s defence ministry reported a spike in Chinese military activity around the island on Wednesday, including 53 military aircraft, with Taiwan on high alert over Beijing’s latest pressure campaign.
• China’s military has yet to comment and has not confirmed it is carrying out any military exercises.
• China, which views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, had been expected to launch drills to express its anger at President Lai Ching-te’s tour of the Pacific that ended on Friday, which included stopovers in Hawaii and the U.S. territory of Guam.
• On Tuesday, Taiwan’s defence ministry said China was deploying its largest navy fleet in regional waters in nearly three decades, posing a threat to Taiwan that is more pronounced than previous Chinese war games.
• A U.S. military official said China’s naval deployments in the East China Sea and South China Sea are elevated but consistent with other large exercises in the past.
• Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, is a country in East Asia. The main island of Taiwan, also known as Formosa, lies between the East and South China Seas in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, with the People’s Republic of China to the northwest, Japan to the northeast, and the Philippines to the south.
