Lt Gen Shankar Assumes Appointment As Commandant of Army Hospital
- Lt Gen Shankar Narayan, NM, VSM, assumed appointment as the Commandant of Army Hospital (R & R) – the apex hospital of the Armed Forces Medical Services on 10 July 2024.
- An alumnus of the 1982 (‘U’) batch of the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, the General Officer specialised in Pediatrics, did post-doctoral sub-specialisation in Neonatology from AIIMS, New Delhi and trained in Pediatric Liver Transplantation at the King’s College Hospital, London.
Sanjay Seth Launches GRSE Accelerated Innovation Nurturing Scheme
- Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth launched “GRSE Accelerated Innovation Nurturing Scheme (GAINS 2024) of Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited ( GRSE) in Kolkata on July 10, 2024.
- It is an innovative scheme which seeks solution to the problems related to the shipyards and promotes technology development using the start-ups created and nurtured in the country.
- The aim is to leverage the vast eco-system of MSMEs and Start-Ups to address present and emerging challenges in the ship design and construction industry, while achieving the objectives of Atmanirbharta.
BRO Seeks LG’s Intervention To Resume Work
- Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has sought intervention of the Ladakh Lt Governor Brigadier (Retd) B D Mishra to complete several border road projects after the work was suspended on the directions of the wildlife department in the Union territory, an official said on Wednesday.
- Chief Engineer, Project Vijayak, Brigadier Vinay Bahl and Chief Engineer, Project Himank, Brigadier Vishal Srivastava raised the issue of the suspended work with the Lt Governor after they called on him here, the official said.
- Briefing Mishra about the construction of new roads along with the widening of existing roads in the border areas of Ladakh, the delegation informed him about the clearance taken by them from the wildlife board for the construction and widening of these roads.
- NITI Aayog led by programme director, security, Maj Gen (Retd) K Narayanan separately called on the Lt Governor and apprised him of the launch of the ‘Sampoornata Abhiyan‘ in Leh and Kargil districts.
- Sampoornata Abhiyan aims to improve health, nutrition, education, and agriculture sectors, Narayanan said, adding “they are partners in the development of Ladakh and would provide expertise in different fields in which the Union territory needs hand-holding”.
China, Bangladesh Elevate Ties, Broaden Cooperation
- China and Bangladesh on Wednesday elevated their relations to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina announced this while meeting in Beijing.
- China cherishes the profound friendship established by the older generation of leaders of China and Bangladesh and is willing to take the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations next year as an opportunity to deepen the high-quality joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and expand the depth and breadth of cooperation in various fields, the Chinese President said.
- Hasina said that Bangladesh firmly adheres to the one-China principle, supports China’s stance on the Taiwan question, resolutely opposes external forces’ interference in China’s internal affairs, and firmly supports China in safeguarding its core interests.
- China’s General Administration of Customs, from January to May, China-Bangladesh bilateral trade amounted to 74.91 billion yuan ($10.30 billion), gaining a positive growth of 0.2 percent year-on-year. China remains Bangladesh’s largest trading partner.
U.S., Allies Announce Additional Air Defence Systems For Ukraine
- The United States and its allies will deliver to Ukraine five additional air defence systems, including Patriot missile batteries and Patriot components, the leaders of those countries said in a joint statement during the NATO summit.
- They added that in the coming months, they intend to provide Ukraine with dozens of tactical air defence systems. Washington, Ukraine’s biggest supporter, has provided more than $50 billion in military aid since 2022.
- After battle lines remained largely frozen since early in the conflict, Moscow made some advances in eastern Ukraine in recent months. Zelenskiy has urged Western governments to increase and speed up military aid to Kyiv’s forces.
