Biden Hosts Philippines Counterpart, Japan PM For First Ever Trilateral Meeting Amid China Tensions

  • US President Joe Biden hosted the Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for the first-ever trilateral summit between the three countries and said that the US commitments to the defence of Japan and the Philippines remain “ironclad”.
  • The meeting, which came amid separate territorial disputes involving Japan, the Philippines and China, saw the US President commit to standing in protection of both countries.
  • Japan and the Philippines both have separate territorial disputes with China, in the former’s case the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea and in the latter’s areas of the South China Sea.

China Sanctions 2 US Defense Companies

  • China announced rare sanctions against two U.S. defense companies over what it said is their support for arms sales to Taiwan, the self-governing island democracy Beijing claims as its own territory to be recovered by force if necessary.
  • The announcement freezes the assets of General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and General Dynamics Land Systems held within China. It also bars the companies’ management from entering the country.
  • Filings show General Dynamics operates a half-dozen Gulfstream and jet aviation services operations in China, which remains heavily reliant on foreign aerospace technology even as it attempts to build its own presence in the field.

Sikkim: Army Conducts Anti-tank Guided Missile Firing At Super-high-altitude

  • Trishakti Corps of the Indian Army conducted a training exercise, involving the firing of anti-tank guided missiles at a super high-altitude area of 17000 feet in Sikkim on Thursday, Defence PRO, Guwahati informed.
  • Missile-firing detachments from mechanised and infantry units of the entire Eastern Command participated in the training exercise.
  • The exercise encompassed comprehensive continuity training and live firing from different platforms on moving as well as static targets depicting battlefield conditions, the release stated.
  • The ATGM system’s performance in high-altitude environments reaffirms the aim of ‘Ek Missile Ek Tank’ and showcases the accuracy and effectiveness of the ATGM system in super-high-altitude terrain, the released stated further.

India-US ESG Discusses Defence Cooperation

  • A meeting of the India-US Executive Steering Group (ESG) took place at the US Army Pacific Headquarters in Hawaii. The Indian delegation, led by Lt Gen TK Aich DCOAS (Strategy), was briefed on the capabilities of the Lightning Academy and Aviation Brigade, as stated by the Indian Army.
  • The ESG meeting serves as a platform to discuss and plan defence cooperation engagements between India and the US, according to the Indian Army.
  • In March, the closing ceremony of the bilateral Tri-Service Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Amphibious Exercise between India and the United States, Tiger Triumph 2024, was held onboard the USS Somerset.

Israel On Alert After Iranian Threat As Gaza War Grinds On

  • Israel was on alert Thursday after its arch-foe Iran threatened reprisals over a strike in Syria this month that killed two Iranian generals, and as the war against Hamas ground on in Gaza.
  • Days after Israel strengthened its air defences and paused leave for combat units, the United States also warned of the risk of an attack by Iran or its allied groups at a time when Middle East tensions have soared.
  • Israel was widely blamed for an April 1 attack that destroyed Iran’s consulate building in Damascus and killed seven Revolutionary Guards, including two generals.
