India Approves Rs 63,000 Crore Deal

  • India is set to acquire 26 Rafale Marine fighter aircrafts from France as the Centre cleared a government-to-government deal. The deal, which is valued at over Rs 63,000 crore, is expected to be signed in the coming weeks, the news agency further reported.
  • Moreover, the deal includes 22 single-seater aircraft and four twin-seater variants, designed specifically for the Indian Navy’s operational requirements.
  • The deal will also ensure five years of performance-based logistics support and spares for the 36 Rafale jets already inducted into the Indian Air Force (IAF) in 2016 under a contract worth Rs 59,000 crore.
  • The 26 Rafale-M jets, manufactured by Dassault Aviation, are expected to be delivered within 37 to 65 months following the signing of the contract, with all jets slated for delivery by 2030-31.
  • The new Rafale Marine aircraft will help upgrade the IAF’s “buddy-buddy” aerial refuelling system, enabling up to 10 Rafale jets to refuel each other mid-air, significantly increasing their operational range.
  • More than 200 drones were seized by the BSF from the Punjab border last year while the number of such seizures was 107 in 2023.
  • About 60 drones have been seized this year.

China Unveils World’s First Anti-drone Barrage

  • In a bold step to counter the growing menace of drone warfare, China has unveiled a cutting-edge air defence system—one it claims is the first of its kind in the world.
  • The new anti-drone swarm and anti-missile barrage weapon system has been developed to neutralise a broad range of low-flying aerial threats including rockets, helicopters, missiles, and most notably, drone swarms. What makes it distinctive is its 16-barrel gun, firing not just bullets, but what chief designer Yu Bin calls a “barrage”—a wall of projectiles that can blanket an entire target area.
  • The United States and Taiwan have already begun deploying long-range drones like the MQ-4C Triton and MQ-9B Reapers. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense has ordered 3,500 domestically produced drones and plans to create a UAV testing facility in Chiayi County to accelerate its drone supply chain.

The visiting US service members interacted with students specialising in a wide range of technological fields, explaining the capabilities of the Poseidon aircraft and discussing its real-world applications in joint missions with the Indian Navy.
