Air Force Looks To Expand Long-range Air-to-ground Arsenal

  • Backed by the success of Operation Sindoor, the IAF is moving to significantly expand its arsenal of long-range air-to-ground and air-to-air missiles, each with a strike range of over 200 km.
  • During Operation Sindoor, the Air Force used advanced stand-off weapons such as the BrahMos, SCALP, Rampage, and Crystal Maze missiles to strike enemy air bases and assets from distances of 250–450 km, staying clear of Chinese HQ-9 air defence systems.
  • The Air Force has asked the DRDO to develop extended-range versions of the indigenous Astra missile, capable of hitting targets beyond 200 km.
  • It is also considering acquiring Russia’s R-37 missile, known for its long reach and potential to give India an edge over both western and northern adversaries. In parallel, the Force has urged DRDO to speed up work on the Project Kusha long-range air defence missile system.

India Expands Danger Zone for Upcoming Missile Trial In Indian Ocean

  • In a significant development, the government has extended a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) for a likely missile test scheduled for 20-21 August 2025.
  • The updated notification expands the danger zone to approximately 2,530 km into the Indian Ocean Region, originating from launch sites along the Odisha coast, including Balasore and Abdul Kalam Island.
  • NOTAMs are issued to ensure the safety of civilian air and maritime traffic by marking areas to avoid during live-fire trials.
  • Recent years have seen successful tests of long-range systems like the Agni-V — with ranges exceeding 5,000 km — and progress in the Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) programme.
