5 Years of Pulwama Attack

  • Five years after the 2019 Pulwama attack in Jammu and Kashmir, the key conspirators, including Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Maulana Masood Azhar, remain elusive while Pakistan is yet to respond to India’s letter rogatory on the matter.
  • On February 14, 2019, Pakistan-sponsored terrorists killed 40 Central Reserve Police Force personnel when an explosive-laden vehicle hit their convoy at Lethpora while they were heading from Jammu to Srinagar on the national highway.
  • The attack was followed by a punitive strike by the IAF on a terrorist training facility, a non-military target in Pakistan, across the international border in the early hours of February 26, 2019. This subsequently led to a retaliation by the Pakistan Air Force the next day and in the ensuing skirmish, a PAF F-16 was shot down along with an IAF MiG-21, with its pilot taken hostage by Pakistan.
  • Two days after the Pulwama terror attack, the IAF carried out its planned firepower demonstration, Exercise Vayu shakti, over the Pokhran range in which 140 fighters including attack helicopters and transport aircraft showcased their capability to hit targets with pinpoint accuracy.

India To Develop Engine For New Arjun Tanks

  • Turning a challenge into an opportunity, India is going ahead with an indigenous engine for its new set of Arjun Main Battle Tanks, after a German firm selected for the project expressed its inability to deliver the power plants in time.
  • The Army has placed an order for 118 Arjun Mk1A tanks worth ₹7523 cr and deliveries are impacted as the engines have not been made available in the required quantities. The tank was to be powered by engines manufactured by a German firm but the company has conveyed that a long timeline of almost four years will be needed for delivery, officials said.
  • DRDO has now started work on an indigenous option which is likely to be ready for production within three years. The DATRAN 1500 engine – being developed for the Futuristic Main Battle Tank program – is being modified to be fitted onto the new Arjun Tanks.

Air Accident On Hawk 132 Aircraft

  • One Hawk aircraft of the IAF met with an accident at Kalaikunda, West Bengal during a training sortie. Both the pilots ejected safely. There has been no loss of life or damage to civilian property on ground. A Court of Inquiry has been constituted to find out the cause of the accident.
  • The Hawk aircraft, of British origin, is a low-wing trainer powered by a single jet engine. Designed and developed by Hawker Siddeley, the prototype took its first flight in 1974. After a merger, British Aerospace and BAE Systems subsequently took over the Hawk project. Over the years, the Hawk aircraft has gained recognition as an advanced jet trainer (AJT) and has been sold to 18 operators worldwide, with more than 900 aircraft in service.
