White House Confirms Russia Developing “Anti-satellite Capability”

  • The White House has confirmed that Russia is developing a capability to target satellites in space and called Moscow’s pursuit of this particular capability “troubling.”
  • White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby said the US is closely monitoring this Russian activity and will continue to take it seriously amid reports of Moscow reportedly developing a space-based nuclear weapon designed to disable or destroy satellites.
  • According to the intelligence presented to Congress, the US military “cannot counter such a weapon and defend its satellites,” according to a report in the New York Times.

Taiwan Increased Defence Spending By 24.2 Pc In 2023

  • Taiwan’s defence spending jumped by 24.2 per cent in 2023 compared to the year prior, according to an annual global military report by the London-based think tank International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) released on.
  • IISS’ Military Balance report also found that Chinese defence spending increased by 5.4 percent to USD 219.5 billion in 2023, representing a 29th straight year of growth, according to Nikkei Asia. Meanwhile, Meia Nouwens, a senior fellow for Chinese security and defence policy at IISS.
  • The IISS report found that global defence spending in 2023 reached USD 2.2 trillion, a 9 percent increase from the previous year. The IISS said the main reasons for the increase were the ongoing Russian war in Ukraine and the increasingly strained relationship between the US and China.

US Conducts ‘Self-defence’ Strikes Against Houthi Targets In Yemen

  • The United States on Wednesday thwarted Houthi strikes against vessels in the Red Sea as it struck seven mobile anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCM) in “self-defence” in the Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said.
  • The US CENTROM forces successfully conducted attacks against Houthi infrastructure and equipment between 1pm to 7.30 pm (Sanaa time).
  • In the attack, the US military forces targeted seven mobile anti-ship cruise missiles, three mobile UAV and one explosive unmanned surface vessel (USV) in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.
  • The Iranian-backed Houthi rebels have been targeting these ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden since November as Israel carried out a ground offensive against the Hamas terror group in the Gaza Strip.

Army Chief Manoj Pande Holds Strategic Talks With US Chief Of Staff

  • Chief of Army Staff, General Manoj Pande, embarked on an official visit to the United States, where he engaged in discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and fostering global peace and security efforts.
  • The Army Chief commenced his visit by reviewing the US Army Guard of Honour. He then participated in a solemn ceremony, paying respects by laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arlington National Cemetery.
  • This visit is another milestone in the Indo-US defence relationship, reflecting a mutual desire to enhance military collaboration, exchange strategic perspectives on global threat perceptions, and work together toward future force development and modernisation.

India To Build Naval Bases In Agatti & Minicoy Islands

  • After PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, India has decided to firmly extend its naval footprint by establishing naval bases in Agatti and Minicoy Islands along with air bases in order to secure the vital sea lands of communication.
  • The Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands sits on the 9-degree channel through which billions of dollars worth of commercial trade passes through while enroute to South-East Asia and North Asia. Minicoy Islands is a mere 524 kilometers from Maldives.
  • India will be making a major maritime security statement when Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on board INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant carrier task forces which includes nearly 15 warships will travel to Minicoy Islands with naval brass to inaugurate a naval base INS Jatayu on March 4-5.
