DRDO Rushes To Build 200km Rockets With China In Mind

  • India is going ahead with the development of long-range rockets for the indigenous Pinaka systems, which will have the ability to hit targets at a distance of over 200 km, enhancing their reach and lethality.
  • The extended range, guided rockets are being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and are likely to heavily involve the private sector as a production partner.
  • The new rockets, which will have a range of around 120-200 km.
  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation is the premier agency under the Department of Defence Research and Development in Ministry of Defence of the Government of India, charged with the military’s research and development, headquartered in Delhi, India.
  • DRDO was established in 1958 after combining Technical Development Establishment (TDEs) of the Indian Army and the Directorate of Technical Development & Production (DTDP) with the Defence Science Organisation (DSO).

Iran Says Revolutionary Guards Attack Israel’s ‘spy HQ’ in Iraq

  • Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they attacked the spy headquarters of Israel in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, state media reported, while the elite force said they also struck in Syria against the Islamic State.
  • The strikes come amid concerns about the escalation of a conflict that has spread through the Middle East since the war between Israel and Palestinian Islamist group Hamas began on Oct. 7, with Iran’s allies also entering the fray from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen.
  • The latest attack on Israel’s resources comes after Iran had vowed to avenge the killing of three members of the Guards in Syria last month. Notably, Iran also backs the Hezbollah militants in Lebanon who have been involved in exchange of fire with Israeli forces on the border.

What Iraqi security sources said

  • Multimillionaire Kurdish businessman Peshraw Dizayee and several members of his family died in the attacks
  • One rocket fell on the house of a senior Kurdish intelligence official and another on a Kurdish intelligence center
  • Air traffic at Kurdistan’s Erbil airport was halted.

How the US reacted

  • The US State Department has condemned the attacks which happened near Kurdistan’s capital Erbil. However, the US revealed that US facilities or personnel were not targeted.
  • “We tracked the missiles, which impacted in Northern Iraq and Northern Syria. No U.S. personnel or facilities were targeted,” Adrienne Watson, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, said in a statement.

CDS General Anil Chauhan To Inaugurate CAPSTAR-9 in Pune

  • Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan will inaugurate the ninth chapter of ‘Capsule on Science, Technology and Applied Research’ (CAPSTAR) at Military Institute of Technology (MILIT), Pune on January 17.
  • The three-day CAPSTER 9 will see active participation from services, academia, DRDO Labs and private defence industries.
  • The CAPSTER – 09 is being held as part of the 12th Raising Day celebrations of MILIT which is commemorated on January 19 every year.
  • The Institute with motto ‘Victory through Technology’ traces its roots to ‘Institute of Armament Studies’ which was set up in ‘College of Military Engineering’ in early 50s.

South American Nations Showing Interest In Pinaka

  • In what could be a significant success for indigenous weapon systems, two South American countries have shown interest in the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launchers.
  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is also developing rockets that would be able to strike targets at 120 km and 200 km.
  • The Indian-made Pinaka weapon system is named after the bow of God Shiva and has been developed by the DRDO. The present rockets can strike targets at up to 75-80 Kms.

DRDO To Continue With Tapas Drone Project

  • The DRDO is continuing with its project to further develop the Tapas medium-altitude, long endurance (MALE) drone in which one of the three services has shown interest to use them around the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for operations.
  • The Tapas drones being developed by the Aeronautical Development Establishment Laboratory have not been able to fully meet the Joint Services Qualitative Requirements of flying at 30,000 feet for over 24 hours at a stretch and have been excluded from the category of mission mode projects.
  • The Tactical Airborne Platform for Aerial Surveillance-Beyond Horizon-201 or TAPAS BH-201 is a medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle being developed in India by Aeronautical Development Establishment on the lines of General Atomics MQ-1 Predator.
