Pakistan Navy Launches 2nd Hangor Class Submarine
- The Pakistan Navy has launched its second Hangor-class submarine, PNS/M Shushuk, at a ceremony in Wuhan, China, as part of efforts to strengthen its maritime defence capabilities, an official statement said on Saturday.
- This marks a significant milestone in the strategic partnership between Pakistan and China, particularly in the realm of naval defence.
- In 2015, a significant defence agreement was signed between Pakistan’s Ministry of Defence and China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Company (CSOC) during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Islamabad.
- These submarines are equipped with six 533mm torpedo tubes and have the capability to launch anti-ship missiles, including the Pakistan-developed Babur-3 subsonic cruise missile, which has a range of 450 km.

Rajnath Singh Launches Centre For Advanced Research-space Psychology
- Rajnath Singh recently made history by becoming the first Raksha Mantri to visit the Institute of Aerospace Medicine of the IAF in Bangalore. During his visit on March 9, 2025, he launched a significant research project titled “Centre for Advanced Research on Space Psychology,” which is an Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Extramural Research Project.
- This initiative focuses on “Space Psychology: Selection and Behavioural Health Training of Astronauts & Astronaut Designates for Indian Space Missions,” aiming to enhance astronaut training for upcoming human spaceflight missions under ISRO’s Gaganyaan program, scheduled for launch in 2026.
- The project concentrates on psychological selection and behavioural health training to prepare astronauts for the mental and emotional challenges of space travel, including psychological resilience, isolation effects, and stress management during long-duration missions.
14th Meeting of ADMM-Plus Experts Working Group
- The 14th meeting of ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus) Experts Working Group (EWG) on Counter-Terrorism will be held in New Delhi from March 19 to 20, 2025.
- India and Malaysia will co-chair the ibid meeting. Delegations from 10 ASEAN members (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore and Thailand) and eight dialogue partners (Australia, New Zealand, RoK, Japan, China, USA and Russia) along with Timor Leste and ASEAN Secretariat will be participating in the meeting.
- This will be the first meeting for activities planned for EWG on Counter-Terrorism for the ongoing cycle from 2024-2027. Discussions will focus on evolving a robust and comprehensive strategy designed to tackle the evolving threat of terrorism and extremism.
- The EWGs are each co-chaired by one ASEAN member state and one dialogue partner following a three-year cycle.
- It currently focuses on seven areas of practical cooperation – Counter-Terrorism, Maritime Security, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Management, Peacekeeping Operations, Military Medicine, Humanitarian Mine Action and Cyber Security.
India, Bangladesh Naval Exercise
- India and Bangladesh conducted a naval exercise and coordinated patrol in the Bay of Bengal this week that provided an opportunity for both the navies to develop closer links in tactical planning, coordination and information sharing for undertaking seamless maritime operations
- Bongosagar 2025 saw the participation of INS Ranvir from the Indian Navy and BNS Abu Ubaidah.
- The exercise involved a range of complex operations encompassing surface firing, tactical manoeuvres, underway replenishment, visit-board-search-seizure (VBSS) cross boarding, communication drills, quiz for operations team and junior officers on professional topics and a steam past.
Two Mega Defence Deals With France
- India is on the verge of finalizing two significant defence deals with France, valued at approximately $11 billion, which are awaiting approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS).
- These deals involve the procurement of 26 Rafale-M fighter jets and the construction of three additional Scorpene-class submarines.
- The Rafale-M jets, primarily intended for deployment on the indigenously built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, include 22 single-seat and four twin-seat trainers.
- The deal also encompasses advanced weapons, simulators, crew training, and five-year performance-based logistics support for the jets.
- Both deals are in their final stages, with all formalities completed and the cases submitted to the CCS for approval. The Indian Navy is keen to conclude these deals before the end of the current fiscal year on March 31, ensuring they are included in this year’s budget.
