“We Understand Actions That Countries Take In Self-Defence”: India on Iran

  • India has a complete zero tolerance for terrorism and understands the actions that countries take in their self-defence, Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in an official statement over the Iranian airstrikes in Pakistan.
  • He said, “This is a matter between Iran and Pakistan. Insofar as India is concerned, we have an uncompromising position of zero tolerance towards terrorism. We understand actions that countries take in their self defence.”
  • Earlier today, amid the diplomatic standoff over Iranian airstrike on a terror camp in Balochistan, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahain said the air attacks in Pakistan targeted an “Iranian terrorist group” and Tehran government had asked Pakistan several times to take action on the group.
  • Today, Pakistan foreign minister Jalil Abbas Jilani said terrorism is a “common threat” to the region and required coordinated efforts to combat it. “Unilateral actions could seriously undermine regional peace and stability,” the Pakistan foreign ministry said.

Committee Recommends Major Changes In DRDO

  • A high-level committee set up to revamp the Defence Research and Development Organisation has suggested having two secretaries in the organisation along with setting up a Defence Technology Commission.
  • The recommendations have been made by the Professor Vijay Raghavan committee, which submitted its report to the Defence Ministry on January 1.
  • Defence sources said the commission has been recommended to be set up under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister, with various other stakeholders as its part. The committee has also recommended the merger of existing over 50 laboratories into around 10 larger ones, reducing the number of directors and removing the role of the cluster Director generals.

Navy to showcase rising combat prowess, ‘Atmanirbharta’, Nari-Shakti at R-Day parade

  • The Indian Navy will project its military might and firm resolve to safeguard the nation’s strategic interests in the maritime domain at the Republic Day parade, amid growing global concerns over the escalating tensions in the Red Sea.
  • The naval tableau at the parade at Kartavya Path on January 26 will also showcase the Navy’s “unwavering” commitment to ‘Nari Shakti’ with an overarching focus on women in all roles and across all ranks, officials said.
  • The contingent of the Indian Navy will have three women platoon commanders — Lt Mudita Goyal, Lt Sharvani Supreiya and Lt Devika H.
  • For the first time, the Navy will have a mixed composition with 144 young men and women marching down the historic Kartavya path reflecting its commitment towards gender neutrality, the officials said.

BEL Receives Additional Orders Worth Rs 1034.31 Cr

  • Aerospace and defence PSU Bharat Electronics on Wednesday announced that it had received two orders amounting to Rs 1034.31 crore since its last disclosure on December 26. The company received a order worth Rs 695 crore from MDL, for supply of spares related to missile systems.
  • The Bengaluru-based company had also received an order worth Rs 339.31 crore, related to Combat Management System, Composite Communication System, Transmit / Receive Modules, Mobile Autonomous Stabilization System and other spares / services. Its cumulative orders are now up to Rs 27,647.31 crore for the current fiscal year 2023-24.
  • BEL, one of the sixteen PSUs under the Union Ministry of Defence and primarily manufactures advanced electronic products for ground and aerospace applications.

CONS Inaugurates Revolutionary Clean And Green CO2-based Ac Plant

  • Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, inaugurated the unique CO2 based Air Conditioning plant at INS Shivaji on 17 Jan 24. The AC Plant is first of its kind and is set to replace HFC (Hydro Fluro Carbons) and HCFC( Hydro Chloro Fluro Carbons) based air conditioning systems onboard ships.
  • This step is in line with India’s commitment towards Kigali Agreement of 2016 to phase down HFC and HCFC based synthetic refrigerants from 2028 onwards and Transcritical CO2 based air conditioning plant is the first step towards it.
  • This air conditioning plant is equipped with advanced digital control systems and smart technology integration economising manpower for running the plant. The system has been developed in collaboration with IISc, Bangalore, a testimony of channelising the Defence-Academia synergy towards induction of a futuristic technology in the Armed Forces.
