MoD Notifies 5th Positive Indigenisation List Of 346 Items
- Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), Department of Defence Production (DDP), Ministry of Defence has notified the fifth Positive Indigenisation List (PIL) consisting of 346 items.
- These include strategically-important Line Replacement Units/Systems/ Sub-systems/Assemblies/Sub-assemblies/Spares & Components and raw materials, with import substitution value worth Rs 1,048 crore.
- The Ministry of Defence had launched the SRIJAN PORTAL in 2020. On this portal, DPSUs and Service Headquarters (SHQs) offer defence items to the industries, including MSMEs and start-ups, for indigenisation.
- Earlier, four PILs comprising 4,666 items were notified by the DDP for DPSUs, of which 2,972, having import substitution value worth Rs 3,400 crore, have already been indigenised.
MoD Set To Clear ₹70,000 Crore Frigates’ Order
- The defence ministry is set to clear a mega ₹70,000 crore order for new warships for the Indian Navy. The stealth frigates will be the most advanced ships to be built in India and are a follow-on of the Nilgiri class that are currently under construction.
- Sources said that state-run yards – Mazagon Dockyards Limited (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) – are the frontrunners for the order that is classified.
- A frigate is a type of warship. In different eras, the roles and capabilities of ships classified as frigates have varied. The name frigate in the 17th to early 18th centuries was given to any full-rigged ship built for speed and manoeuvrability, intended to be used in scouting, escort and patrol roles.
- The Nilgiri-class frigates, formally classified as the Project-17 Alpha frigates (P-17A), are a series of stealth guided-missile frigates currently being built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), for the Indian Navy.
- The seventh and final ship of the Project 17A frigates, named Mahendragiri, was launched on 1 September 2023 at the Mazagon Dock
Two Soldiers Injured In Gunfight With Terrorists
- Two soldiers were injured in an encounter with terrorists in a forest village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district early Thursday, officials said. The encounter took place at Jaddan Bata village in Kastigarh area around 2:00 am when terrorists opened fire on a temporary security camp established in a government school for the ongoing search operations, the officials said.
- They said security forces retaliated and the exchange of fire between the two sides continued for more than an hour.
- Two soldiers suffered minor injuries in the terrorist firing, the officials said, adding efforts are on to flush out the terrorists.
- Doda district, which was cleared of terrorism in 2005, has witnessed a series of attacks since June 12 when six security personnel were injured in a terror attack in Chattergala pass, followed by a firefight in Gandoh the next day which left one policeman injured.

12 Naxals Killed In Encounter With Police
- AT LEAST 12 Maoists, including a senior Divisional Committee member, were killed in an encounter with a police team in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra on Wednesday, police said. Two police personnel were injured in the gunfight.
- The encounter took place at Wandoli village located close to the border with Chhattisgarh.
- According to Gadchiroli Police, they received information that 12-15 Maoists were camping near Wandoli village, following which an operation was launched around 10 am on Wednesday. Seven teams, comprising commandos of the elite C-60 unit and other district police personnel, were sent to the location.Police said the operation lasted six hours and after a fierce gunfight, the bodies of 12 Maoists were recovered. Several automatic weapons were also found at the site.
- “A heavy exchange of fire began in the afternoon and continued intermittently until late evening for more than six hours. Area searches have resulted in the recovery of 12 Maoist bodies so far,” said a senior police officer.
Navy Rescues Nine After Vessel Capsizes Off Oman Coast
- As part of its outreach in the Indian Ocean Region, Indian Navy deployed warship INS Teg to rescue crew members onboard a Comoros-flagged cargo vessel that capsized off Oman coast three days ago. Nine crew members – eight Indians and a Sri Lankan national – were successfully saved.
- The vessel MT Falcon Prestige had capsized on July 14 and had transmitted a distress call around 2200 hours. The merchant vessel had a crew of 16, of which 13 were Indian seafarers.
- The operations are being conducted ed challenging weather conditions as the area is experiencing rough seas and strong winds. Navy’s Long Range Maritime Reconnaissance aircraft P8I is also assisting in the search for survivors.
- The port of Duqm is located on Oman’s southwest coast, close to the Sultanate’s major oil and gas mining projects, including a major oil refinery that forms part of Duqm’s vast industrial zone, Oman’s biggest single economic project.
