12th India-Mongolia Joint Working Group Meeting
- The 12th JWG meeting between the Defence Ministries of India and Mongolia took place in Ulaanbaatar on May 16-17, 2024. The meeting was co-chaired by Joint Secretary, MoD, India Amitabh Prasad and State Secretary of MoD, Mongolia Brigadier General Gankhuyag Davagdorj.
- During the JWG, both sides expressed satisfaction at the ongoing defence cooperation between the two countries. They reviewed the progress on various bilateral defence cooperation initiatives and identified means to further enhance cooperation in these areas, articulating steps in this direction.
- India established diplomatic relations with Mongolia in 1955 and it was the first country outside the Soviet bloc to open diplomatic relations with Mongolia.
- The Indian Resident Mission in Ulaanbaatar was opened in 1971.
- This relationship was upgraded to “strategic partnership” in 2015 when the Indian Prime Minister visited Mongolia and declared it as an essential component of ‘Act East Policy’.
- In 2022, an India-built oil refinery at the cost of more than USD 1 billion and with a capacity of 1.5 million metric tonnes was opened near Sainshand in southern Dornogovi province of Mongolia.
- This refinery will take care of 75 % of Mongolia’s oil refining needs.
- Joint defence exercises code-named Nomadic Elephant.
- India is also an active participant in an annual week-long joint training exercise called the Khaan Quest, hosted by Mongolia.
BEML Secures Rs 250 crore Order
- BEML Limited has secured an order from Northern Coal Fields Limited (NCL) for the supply of 28 units of BH100 Rear Dump Trucks. The total value of the order is Rs 250 crore. The BH100 Rear Dump Truck is engineered to transport payloads of up to 100 tonnes, specifically designed for the efficient handling of overburden and coal in heavy-duty mining operations.
- This order marks a significant milestone in the BEML’s continued partnership with NCL, reflecting the trust and reliance on the Defence Public Sector Undertaking’s heavy-duty mining equipment. The dumpers will be maintained under a Guaranteed Spare Parts contract for a period of five years, ensuring uninterrupted service and operational efficiency.
- The BEML BH100 Rear Dump Truck is renowned for its robust design, advanced features, and operational efficiency. Engineered for fuel efficiency, it helps reduce operational costs while maintaining high performance levels.
2ND India – Australia – Indonesia Trilateral Maritime Security Workshop
- The 2nd edition of India – Australia – Indonesia Trilateral Maritime Security Workshop (TMSW) was conducted from 15 – 17 May 24, at INS Dronacharya, Kochi, India.
- The Theme of the workshop was ‘Indian Ocean Region: Collaborative Efforts to Enhance Regional Maritime Security’, which was chosen to discuss ongoing maritime security challenges and opportunities for collaboration between the three maritime neighbours in the region.
Philippines To Buy 5 Japan-made Coast Guard Ships In $400 Mn Deal
- The Philippines has agreed to buy five coast guard patrol ships from Japan in a deal worth more than $400 million, Manila said, as the Southeast Asian country faces growing Chinese pressure in the South China Sea.
- Japan will loan the Philippines 64.38 billion yen ($413 million) to buy the five 97-metre Multi-Role Response Vessels and pay for the “development of the required support facilities”, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
- “This will support the PCG in improving its capabilities for maritime operations particularly in addressing transnational crimes,” the statement said, referring to the Philippine Coast Guard.
- Philippine Coast Guard boats have also been fired on with water cannons by the China Coast Guard, with the latest incident happening on April 30 near the China-controlled Scarborough Shoal.
Indian Army Ammo Imports Down Significantly Due To Indigenisation
- Indigenisation in the defence sector under the Make in India policy has helped the Indian Army significantly cut down its dependence on imports to meet its requirements.
- “The Indian Army has a budget of around Rs 20,000 crore to acquire ammunition for the existing inventory of weapon systems in the force. Till a few years ago, the force was spending around 35-40 per cent on buying ammunition from abroad.”
- The officials said the ammunition has been indigenised for different types of weapon systems, like tanks, artillery guns, air defence missiles and multiple grenade launcher systems, among others.
