Trump Approves Historic U.S. Defence Budget for 2026

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has formally enacted the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for the fiscal year 2026, approving one of the largest military budgets in American history. The legislation authorises an unprecedented $901 billion in defence expenditure, exceeding the administration’s original request by $8 billion. Despite the bill’s scale and strategic implications, its signing was carried out quietly without a public ceremony.

The NDAA is a comprehensive policy framework that shapes U.S. defence priorities, covering military procurement, troop salaries, force structure, and responses to emerging global threats. It represents a negotiated settlement between the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate, blending provisions from both chambers.

Notably, the law includes measures to strengthen European security, even though Trump has traditionally favoured reducing U.S. defence commitments in the region and expects European allies to shoulder greater responsibility. The legislation also allocates $800 million in military assistance to Ukraine, spread over two years, under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. This funding supports U.S. defence firms supplying equipment to Ukraine at a time when Washington is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

India’s Fleet Support Vessel Project Nears Completion

India’s push to modernise its naval logistics capabilities has reached a critical phase, with negotiations for the acquisition of five Fleet Support Vessels (FSVs) entering their final stage. The update was shared by Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt, underscoring the project’s strategic importance for the Indian Navy.

The programme is anchored at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in Visakhapatnam, which has partnered with Anadolu Shipyard of Turkey, a member of the TAIS consortium. This collaboration follows established defence procurement norms and focuses on advanced ship design and construction.

Each vessel is expected to be around 230 metres long with a displacement of about 45,000 tonnes, making them among the largest auxiliary ships in India’s naval fleet. Designed for long-duration deployments, these ships will act as mobile logistics platforms, enabling refuelling, resupply, and ammunition replenishment at sea, thereby enhancing the endurance and reach of naval task forces.

Indigenous Stealth Cruise Missile Showcased by JSR Dynamics

India has taken another significant step towards defence self-reliance with the unveiling of a new stealth cruise missile system, designated LRP2GM (Long Range Powered Precision Guided Munition). Developed by JSR Dynamics, the missile was recently presented to the Indian Navy as a versatile precision-strike solution.

The missile can be launched from both land and sea platforms and falls within the lightweight category, weighing between 360 and 390 kilograms. With a length of under 4.5 metres and a wingspan of around 2.2 metres, it is designed for integration across a wide range of platforms, including warships, coastal defence systems, and potentially naval aircraft.

Powered by a turbojet engine generating approximately 1,500 newtons of thrust, the missile can cruise at speeds close to Mach 0.9 and operate at altitudes of up to 10 kilometres. Its endurance exceeds 45 minutes, allowing for long-range standoff strikes. Advanced navigation combining inertial guidance with anti-jamming satellite systems ensures accuracy even in contested electronic warfare environments, particularly relevant to Indo-Pacific security scenarios.

India Temporarily Suspends Visa Services in Parts of Bangladesh

India has temporarily halted operations at its visa application centres in Khulna and Rajshahi, Bangladesh, due to rising security concerns following anti-India demonstrations. The decision was taken after protests organised by local groups raised fears over the safety of Indian diplomatic staff and facilities.

While visa services in Dhaka have resumed normal operations, authorities stated that centres in affected regions would remain closed whenever the security situation deteriorates. In Rajshahi, protestors attempted to march towards the Indian Assistant High Commission but were stopped by police barricades, leading to sit-in demonstrations.

These developments follow similar incidents in Dhaka, where demonstrators reportedly issued threats against Indian diplomats. In response, India summoned Bangladesh’s envoy and urged the interim government to ensure the protection of foreign missions in line with international diplomatic obligations.

China Eastern Airlines to Resume Daily Delhi–Shanghai Flights

In a positive signal for regional connectivity, China Eastern Airlines has announced the launch of daily non-stop flights between Delhi and Shanghai starting 2 January 2026. The move was welcomed by the Chinese Embassy in India, which highlighted plans to restore additional routes such as Kolkata–Kunming and introduce a new Mumbai–Shanghai connection.

The decision follows strong passenger demand after the airline restarted the Delhi–Shanghai service in November 2025 with limited frequency. Air travel between India and China had been suspended since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was further delayed by prolonged border tensions following the Galwan Valley clash.

Improved diplomatic engagement, including disengagement agreements at remaining friction points like Depsang and Demchok, and high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping at the BRICS summit in Kazan, have contributed to a gradual stabilisation of bilateral relations, paving the way for renewed civilian exchanges.
