Eight Naxals killed in Jharkhand encounter

Eight Naxals were killed in an encounter with CoBRA commandos of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and police in Bokaro district of Jharkhand on Monday morning, officials said. The exchange of fire started around 5.30 am in Lugu Hills of Lalpania area of the district, they said.

The troops of 209 Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) conducted the operation in which eight Naxals were killed and an AK series rifle, three INSAS rifles, a self-loading rifle (SLR), eight country-made guns and a pistol were seized, the officials said.

No injuries have been reported among the security personnel, they said. The CoBRA is the special jungle warfare unit of the CRPF.

Exercise Desert Flag-10

  • A contingent of the Indian Air Force reached Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates to participate in Exercise Desert Flag-10, a premier multinational air combat exercise. The IAF is fielding MiG-29 and Jaguar aircraft in the exercise.
  • Exercise Desert Flag is a multinational exercise being hosted by the UAE Air Force, with participating contingents from the Air Forces of Australia, Bahrain, France, Germany, Qatar Saudi Arabia, Republic of Korea, Turkey, UAE, United Kingdom, and the United States in addition to the Indian Air Force.
  • The exercise is scheduled to take place between 21 April to 08 May 2025.
  • The aim of the exercise is to undertake complex and diverse fighter engagements, with exchange of operational knowledge and best practices with some of the most capable Air Forces in the world.

Aryabhata, Completes 50 Years

  • India’s first satellite, Aryabhata, marked its golden jubilee on April 19, 2025, commemorating 50 years since its historic launch. Named after the ancient Indian mathematician and astronomer, Aryabhata, the satellite was a pioneering achievement for the ISRO and a defining moment in the nation’s technological journey.
  • Launched from the Kapustin Yar facility in the USSR aboard a Soviet Kosmos-3M rocket, Aryabhata made India the 11th country in the world to send a satellite into orbit.
  • The satellite’s primary mission was scientific and experimental, focusing on X-ray astronomy, aeronomy, and solar physics.
  • The 50th anniversary of Aryabhata is being celebrated as a tribute to the visionaries like Dr. Vikram Sarabhai and Prof. U.R. Rao, whose efforts transformed India’s aspirations in space into reality.

India Launches First Indigenous AI Server ‘Adipoli’

  • In a significant development that marks a milestone in India’s artificial intelligence journey, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw has unveiled India’s first fully designed indigenous AI server.
  • This groundbreaking technology, developed by VVDN Technologies, represents a major leap forward in the country’s technological capabilities and self-reliance efforts.Named ‘Adipoli’—a Malayalam word meaning “awesome” or “fantastic”—the server features eight powerful GPUs and was conceptualised and built entirely within India, with approximately 80% of the development work taking place in Kochi, Kerala.
  • The AI server ‘Adipoli’ represents a culmination of India’s growing expertise in advanced computing and artificial intelligence. Fully equipped with eight graphics processing units (GPUs), the server demonstrates India’s capacity to design and develop complex computing infrastructure domestically.

BrahMos export: Second battery of missile shipped out for Philippines

  • The second battery of the BrahMos cruise missile has been moved out for the Philippines, marking a milestone in Indian defence exports.
  • The deal with the Philippines was announced in January 2022 for the supply of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, making it the country’s first major defence export order.
  • Philippines Department of National Defence issued the ‘Notice of Award’ to India’s BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited, approving a $374.96 million (`2,700 crore) contract for the purchase of a shore-based anti-ship missile system (SBASMS) from India.
  • Philippines will get three batteries for the missile system, which has a range of 290 kilometres and a speed of 2.8 Mach (around 3,400 kms, thrice the speed of sound).

Tri-services Future Warfare Course

  • The second edition of the Tri-services Future Warfare Course will be held at Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi from April 21 to May 09, 2025.
  • The course is being conducted under the aegis of Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff and coordinated by the Tri-services think-tank, Centre for Joint Warfare Studies (CENJOWS).
  • Building on the success of the first course held in September 2024, this expanded three-week program continues the vision of Chief of the Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan to prepare officers for the complex challenges of modern warfare.
