Indian Army to Procure 850 Kamikaze Drones

Drawing lessons from Operation Sindoor, the Indian Army has initiated an advanced proposal to procure nearly 850 kamikaze (loitering) drones. The acquisition process is expected to be cleared soon by the Defence Acquisition Council and will be executed under fast-track procurement procedures. These drones, along with their launch systems, will be sourced from indigenous manufacturers.

In the long term, the Army plans to induct close to 30,000 loitering munitions to equip all its combat formations. To effectively deploy this capability, each infantry battalion will be assigned a dedicated Ashni platoon, responsible for operating drones for precision strikes, surveillance, and counterinsurgency missions.

Fast Patrol Vessel ‘Amulya’ Commissioned

The Indian Coast Guard has commissioned ICGS Amulya, the third vessel of the new-generation Adamya class fast patrol vessels. Built by Goa Shipyard Limited, the 51-metre-long ship will enhance maritime surveillance, search and rescue operations, anti-smuggling efforts, and pollution response along India’s eastern coastline.

With more than 60 percent indigenous content, Amulya highlights India’s progress in domestic shipbuilding and aligns with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives. The vessel’s name, meaning “priceless,” reflects the Coast Guard’s commitment to safeguarding national maritime interests.

Validation of 100 km Kharga Chakra EW-Resilient UAV

The Indian Army’s Western Command successfully validated the indigenous Kharga Chakra UAV, capable of operating at a range of 100 kilometres in electronically contested environments. Developed by Indian start-ups, the UAV demonstrated enhanced endurance and resilience against electronic warfare threats during trials at the Mahajan Field Firing Range.

The Army’s Southern Command is spearheading the development of a comprehensive drone ecosystem by field-testing indigenous systems during exercises such as Exercise Trishul. Large-scale drone and counter-drone operations were further assessed during Exercise Vayu Samanvay-II, reinforcing the Army’s push towards advanced unmanned warfare capabilities.

Parliament Passes SHANTI Bill, 2025

A major policy reform was achieved with the passage of the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Bill, 2025. Welcomed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the legislation introduces significant changes to India’s civil nuclear sector by allowing private sector participation in select areas for the first time.

The Bill aims to support India’s goal of achieving 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047. It also grants statutory status to the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), strengthening regulatory oversight through enhanced inspection powers, safety enforcement, and a clear licensing framework for nuclear facilities.
