Putin And Kim Jong-un Forge ‘Breakthrough’ Partnership

  • Vladimir Putin has declared a significant elevation in ties b/w Russia and North Korea, emphasising a commitment to mutual assistance in the event of aggression, following what he described as a “breakthrough” strategic partnership announced during his rare visit to the reclusive state.
  • Thousands of North Koreans chanting “welcome Putin” lined the city’s wide boulevards brandishing Russian and North Korean flags and bouquets of flowers as Putin commenced his first visit to North Korea in 24 years.
  • The leaders signed a comprehensive partnership agreement that supersedes previous accords from 1961, 2000, and 2001. Putin elaborated on the agreement, stating, “The comprehensive partnership agreement signed today includes, among other things, the provision of mutual assistance in the event of aggression against one of the parties to this agreement.”
  • Russia received over 10,000 containers from North Korea since September, equivalent to 260,000 metric tons of munitions or related material, with at least 10 North Korean-made missiles launched on Ukraine by Russian forces.

NIMAS Felicitates Five of Its Distinguished Alumni

  • The National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS), on June 19, 2024, felicitated five of its distinguished alumni who have successfully summited Mount Everest.
  • Kabak Yano (2024), Tagit Sorang Abraham (2021), Tashi Yangjom (2021), Tongchen Nimsonga (2018) and Dorjee Khandu (2018) were among the Everest climbers who were honored at the felicitation ceremony in Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh by Director NIMAS Colonel Ranveer Singh Jamwal.
  • Addressing an audience of 120 students from Basic Mountaineering Course Ser No- 48, Director NIMAS expressed his admiration for the Everest climbers’ remarkable achievements & dedication. “We are immensely proud of our alumni who have summitted the world’s highest peak. Their accomplishments are a testament to their hard work, determination, and the rigorous training provided by NIMAS,” he added.
  • NIMAS is a premier institution dedicated to providing world-class training in all three verticles (Land, Aero and Aqua) of adventure and presently imparts adventure course certification in mountaineering, mountain terrain biking, white water rafting, scuba diving, paramotor and paragliding.

US Army Kills Senior ISIS Official In Syria

  • A senior ISIS official was killed in a US airstrike in Syria on Sunday, the US Central Command said in a statement on Wednesday (local time). The senior ISIS official and facilitator have been identified as Usamah Jamal Muhammad Ibrahim al-Janabi.
  • The US military continues to target ISIS officials in Africa and the Middle East, CNN reported. Nearly three weeks back, an airstrike conducted in a remote area near Dhaardaar in Somalia was assessed to have killed three ISIS terrorists, CNN reported, citing US Africa Command.
  • In an article published in North Korea state media ahead of the visit, Putin thanked Pyongyang for showing “unwavering support” for Russia’s war in Ukraine and said the two countries were “ready to confront the ambition of the collective West.”

Massive Security Ops In Srinagar Ahead Of PM Modi’s Visit

  • PM Narendra Modi will be in Jammu and Kashmir today for a two-day visit that will draw global attention, with its highlight being a yoga programme on the banks of Srinagar’s Dal Lake on the occasion of the International Yoga Day. This is his first visit to the UT after being elected for a historic third term.
  • Around 4,000 people are expected to attend Friday’s yoga session at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Complex or SKICC, located on the banks of Dal Lake.
  • Since 2015, PM Modi has led the International Day of Yoga celebrations at iconic locations, including Delhi’s Kartavya Path, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Ranchi, Lucknow and Mysuru.
  • Last year, he led the programme at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, which is expected to bring more attention to the Srinagar programme.

Cabinet Approves N. F. l. E. S.

  • The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi today approved  the proposal of Ministry of Home Affairs for Central Sector Scheme “National Forensic Infrastructure Enhancement Scheme (NFIES) with a total financial outlay of Rs. 2254.43 crore during the period from 2024-25 to 2028-29.
  • The Cabinet has approved the following components under this Scheme:
  • i. Establishment   of  Campuses   of  the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) in the country.
  • ii. Establishment of Central Forensic Science Laboratories in the country.
  • iii. Enhancement of existing infrastructure of the Delhi Campus of the NFSU.
  • The Government of India is committed to put in place an effective and efficient criminal justice system, based on scientific and timely forensic examination of evidence. The scheme underscores the importance of high quality, trained forensic professionals in the timely and scientific examination of evidence for an efficient criminal justice process, leveraging the advancements in technology & evolving manifestations and methods of crime.
