Operation Olivia
- In a major boost to marine conservation, the Indian Coast Guard’s (ICG) annual mission ‘Operation Olivia’ helped protect a record of over 6.98 lakh Olive Ridley turtles nested at the Rushikulya river mouth in Odisha during February 2025.
- Conducted annually from November to May, Operation Olivia is an important initiative of the ICG aimed at ensuring safe nesting grounds for Olive Ridley turtles particularly at Gahirmatha Beach and surrounding coastal areas of Odisha, which see the arrival of over eight lakh turtles each year.
- The olive ridley sea turtle, also known commonly as the Pacific ridley sea turtle, is a species of turtle in the family Cheloniidae. The species is the second-smallest and most abundant of all sea turtles found in the world.

Niti Paper for Defence Laws
- A Niti Aayog working paper has proposed changes to defence laws to facilitate a resilient domestic supply chain for in-house manufacturing and address challenges of cybersecurity more comprehensively.
- Amidst evolving geopolitical tensions, cybersecurity threats and global supply chain disruption, the paper said this is vital for national security and operational readiness.
- The Security Division acts as an interface between NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of External Affairs. The Security Division offers support and assistance to the line ministries involved in both internal and external security matters, fostering collaboration among the nation’s security agencies. Its goal is to provide strategic, comments to assist these ministries achieve their long-term vision of being prepared to tackle all potential threats. The division’s purpose is to encourage integrated thinking and ensure the coordination between departments and ministries to safeguard and advance national security objectives.
- The NITI Aayog (lit. ’Policy Commission’; abbreviation for National Institution for Transforming India) serves as the apex public policy think tank of the Government of the Republic of India, and the nodal agency tasked with catalyzing economic development, and fostering cooperative federalism and moving away from bargaining federalism through the involvement of State Governments of India in the economic policy-making process using a bottom-up approach.
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra To Resume Through Nathu La Pass
- The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a revered pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar in Tibet, is set to resume through the Nathu La Pass in Sikkim in June 2025 after a five-year suspension.
- The hiatus was initially caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequently by border tensions along the India-China Line of Actual Control. The resumption of the yatra coincides with Sikkim’s 50th statehood anniversary, a milestone expected to be celebrated by PM Modi during the statehood day events. Organised annually by the Ministry of External Affairs, the yatra traditionally operates from June to September via two routes: Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand and Nathu La Pass in Sikkim.
- The Nathu La route, opened in 2015, is considered shorter, more accessible, and safer than the Lipulekh route due to its well-maintained roads and peaceful environment.
EAM Jaishankar, Netherlands Defence Minister Hold Talks
- External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held a meeting with the Netherlands Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans in The Hague on Monday and exchanged views on their respective security perspectives and challenges.
- Jaishankar interacted with representatives of the Indian community, noting the value of the community’s contribution to building a stronger relationship between the two nations.
- Earlier, Jaishankar met Netherlands Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp and appreciated the country’s strong condemnation of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and its support for a zero-tolerance policy against terrorism.
- Jaishankar said that he and Veldkamp discussed deepening bilateral partnership and engagement with the European Union.
- “Thank FM Caspar Veldkamp of the Netherlands for hosting me today in The Hague. Appreciate Netherlands’ strong condemnation of the Pahalgam attack. And support for zero tolerance against terrorism. Had wide-ranging discussions on deepening our bilateral partnership and engagement with the EU. Exchanged views on the global situation in an era of multi-polarity,” the EAM stated on X.
- During his visit, Jaishankar also interacted with strategic experts in the Hague. He said that they discussed why India and the EU should engage more in an era of multipolarity and strategic autonomy.
- In a post on X, Jaishankar stated, “A good exchange of views with strategic experts in the Hague this morning. Discussed why India and the Netherlands/EU should engage more deeply in an era of multi-polarity and strategic autonomy.”
- According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Jaishankar will be on an official visit to the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany from May 19-24.
- In the press release, MEA stated, “During the visit, EAM will meet the leadership of the three countries and hold discussions with his counterparts on the entire gamut of bilateral relations and regional and global matters of mutual interest.”
