Russia And Ukraine Trade Attacks
- Russia and Ukraine exchanged drone, missile and shelling attacks on Sunday. At least two people were killed in Ukrainian strikes on the partly Russian-occupied Donetsk region, Russian state media said, while Ukrainian officials said Russian strikes wounded at least five people. Along the front line in the east, Russia said it had taken control of two villages, one in the Kharkiv region and one in the Luhansk region.
- Ukrainian shelling of Russia-held areas of the Donetsk region killed two people in the village of Horlivka, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti said.
- Three people were wounded by Russian drone strikes in southern Ukraine’s partly occupied Kherson region, local officials said Sunday morning. In the country’s northeast, officials in the Kharkiv region said two people were wounded when a village was hit by Russian shells.
- Russia’s Ministry of Defence said Sunday that its troops had taken control of two villages: Pishchane Nizhne in the Kharkiv region and Andriivka, sometimes referred to as Rozivka, in the Luhansk region. Kyiv did not immediately comment.
Israeli Military Downs Missile Launched From Yemen
- The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reported that early Sunday morning its air defence fighters, using the “Arrow 3″ missile defence system, successfully intercepted a surface-to-surface missile that made its way towards the territory of the country from Yemen.
- The missile attack came after the Israel Air Force struck targets in Yemen in response to a drone attack launched from that country that struck Tel Aviv at the end of last week.
- Lebanon’s Hezbollah on Sunday said it fired Katyusha rockets at northern Israel in response to an overnight Israeli strike that, according to state media, hit a weapons depot and wounded six people.
- Hezbollah has traded near-daily cross-border fire with Israeli forces in support of Hamas since the Palestinian militant group’s October 7 attack on southern Israel triggered war in the Gaza Strip.
2024 Paris Olympics
- 24 Armed Forces personnel are among the 117 Indian athletes who are all set to make the nation proud at the Paris Olympics, beginning July 26, 2024. Among these 24 athletes, 22 are men, including star Javelin Thrower Subedar Neeraj Chopra, and two are women, which marks the maiden participation of female Service athletes at the Olympics.
- The Paris 2024 Olympic mascot, Phryge, represents freedom and showcases important historical figures of the French Republic.
- Subedar Neeraj Chopra, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Gold medalist, will again vie for top honours as his participation in the Paris Olympics comes on the back of exceptional performances which earned him a Gold medal each at the 2023 Asian Games, 2023 World Athletics Championship, 2024 Diamond League, and 2024 Paavo Nurmi Games.
Indian Navy’s Annual Safety Review-2024
- The Annual Safety Review- 2024 (ASR-24), the 7th edition of Indian Navy’s apex meeting on safety, was conducted at Southern Naval Command, Kochi on 19 Jul 24.
- Adm Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff delivered the keynote address virtually and reviewed the Annual Safety Report. The CNS emphasized the need to build a robust safety culture by encouraging units to educate and train personnel to think and act safely.
- The Indian Navy conducts the safety review at the apex level every year, with the objective of taking stock of all aspects concerned to operational and functional safety whilst identifying and institutionalizing steps to reduce occurrence of incidents and provide an organisational framework to strengthen safety culture.
BSF Troops On High Alert Following Violent Protests In Bangladesh
- Following situation in Bangladesh the Border Security Force (BSF) troopers are on a high alert.
- Tripura Frontier Inspector General (IG) of the BSF Patel Piyush Purushottam Das said that the current law and order situation in Bangladesh due to anti-reservation agitation is causing security challenges for the border force.
- What Triggered The Protests?
- The demonstrations started last month after the High Court reinstated a quota system for government jobs, overturning a 2018 decision by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government to scrap it.
- That move, which covered the 30% of jobs reserved for family members of freedom fighters in the 1971 war for independence from Pakistan, followed similar student protests.
- But the Supreme Court suspended the high court order after the government’s appeal. On Sunday it dismissed the lower court order and directed that 93% of jobs should be open to candidates on merit.
- The court reserved 5% of jobs for family members of independence fighters and 2% for people from so-called backward groups and the disabled.
India Keeps A Close Watch On Spread Of Hizb Ut-Tahrir Ideology
- The arrest of six Hizb ut-Tahrir sympathisers in Chennai in the recent past has raised concern in the Indian security establishment, which suspects that the terror group may try to spread its network in India.
- Hizb ut-Tahrir is already banned in several Middle Eastern and Central Asian countries. The authorities in Chennai had launched a crackdown against extremist cells in May and arrested six Hizb ut-Tahrir sympathisers along with literature and propaganda material supporting the group’s ideology.
