Matsya-6000: India’s Leap into Deep-Sea Exploration
India is preparing to enter an exclusive global group capable of conducting manned missions to extreme ocean depths. The country’s first human-rated submersible, Matsya-6000, developed by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), is nearing its initial test phase.
Weighing 28 tonnes and equipped with a robust 2.25-metre personnel sphere made of boiler steel, the submersible will undertake its first crewed descent of 500 metres off the Chennai coast early next year. This serves as a foundational step toward the ambitious goal of sending aquanauts 6,000 metres below sea level, under the Samudrayaan Mission, a component of India’s Deep Ocean Mission.
The mission’s first crew—Ramesh Raju and Jatinder Pal Singh—will play a historic role in India’s ocean research endeavours. With advanced systems such as high-density Li-Po batteries, drop-weight escape technology, emergency buoys, and propulsion systems, Matsya-6000 represents India’s entry into deep-sea capability alongside major nations like the US, Russia, Japan, France, and China. This initiative supports India’s efforts to enhance blue-economy potential across its 11,098-km coastline.
ITBP’s 27th Battalion Recognised as Best Anti-Naxal Unit
In recognition of exemplary service in Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police’s 27th Battalion has been awarded the Best Anti-Naxal Battalion title. The honour was conferred by ITBP Director General Praveen Kumar during the Raising Day Parade in Udhampur.
Based in Kerala but deployed in the challenging Mohla-Manpur region of Chhattisgarh, the unit has been instrumental in weakening Maoist influence. A major achievement came in August 2025, when the battalion neutralised two senior Naxal leaders—Vijay Reddy and Lokesh Salame—in a decisive encounter.
Beyond combat success, the battalion has made a substantial humanitarian impact by setting up a Field Hospital and the region’s first Veterinary Field Hospital, delivering medical services to over 6,000 villagers and thousands of livestock across tribal communities.
India-Russia Annual Summit: Strengthening Naval and Strategic Cooperation
The upcoming India-Russia Annual Summit on December 5 is expected to reinforce long-standing defence and strategic cooperation between the two nations. In the lead-up to the summit, Russian Maritime Board Chairman Nikolai Patrushev met with India’s Defence Secretary and senior naval officials to discuss joint naval exercises and technical collaboration.
Both sides reiterated their commitment to a multipolar world order, global stability, and coordinated engagement in key multilateral groupings such as the UN, SCO, BRICS, and G20. Enhanced cooperation in the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific region remains a key area of focus.
Israel’s Plan to Seize West Bank Historical Site Draws Global Attention
Israel has announced plans to take control of parts of Sebastia, a major archaeological site in the West Bank, leading to renewed international scrutiny. According to documents accessed by rights groups, the area spans roughly 450 acres, making it Israel’s largest archaeological land seizure so far.
The move has sparked controversy, especially as settlers simultaneously established a new outpost near Bethlehem. Rights organisations, such as Peace Now and Human Rights Watch, have raised concerns over expulsions of Palestinians and potential violations of international law. Sebastia holds immense cultural and historical significance for Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike, believed to house the remains of ancient Samaria and the burial site of John the Baptist.
India and Tanzania Hold First-Ever Navy Staff Talks
Marking a new milestone in maritime cooperation, the Indian Navy and the Tanzania People’s Defence Force Navy held their first Staff Talks in Dar es Salaam. The discussions, co-chaired by Rear Admiral Srinivas Maddula and Commodore FJ Mwasikolile, focused on boosting operational collaboration and training.
Meanwhile, the Indian Navy’s stealth frigate INS Sahyadri represented India during the sea phase of Exercise Malabar 2025 at Guam. The exercise included anti-submarine warfare drills, gunnery practice, VBSS operations, underway replenishment, and cross-deck helicopter maneuvers, reinforcing India’s naval readiness in the Indo-Pacific.
