Exercise Prasthan In Andhra’s Kakinada

  • Under the aegis of Eastern Naval Command, the Naval Officer-in-Charge, Andhra Pradesh conducted Exercise Prasthan 2023 for security of offshore development area in Kakinada.
  • As per a Navy statement, the exercise was conducted on the Rig ship Platinum Explorer of ONGC and RG Fixed Oil Platform of Vedanta Ltd.
  • The exercise was aimed at rehearsing responses in handling contingencies and checking the efficacy of security mechanisms at ODA.
  • It witnessed participation from multiple organisations, namely the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, Oil Operators, Port Authorities, the State Fisheries Department and Marine Police.
  • Assets from the Indian Navy comprised of INS Kora, INS Tihayu, four Immediate Support Vessels, Marine Commandoes, Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team and Helicopters. ICG Ship Kanaklata Barua also participated in the exercise.
  • During the exercise various situations viz Terrorist Attack, Bomb Scare, Major Fire, Gas Leak, Oil Spill, Explosion etc. were simulated and measures to overcome the contingencies were exercised in close coordination with all state agencies and oil operators.

‘IMPHAL’- 3rd Stealth Destroyer of P15B Delivered     

  • Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has delivered the Third Stealth Destroyer of Project 15B Class Guided Missile Destroyer i.e., Yard 12706 (IMPHAL) to the Indian Navy.
  • The Acceptance Document was signed by Sanjeev Singhal, Chairman & Managing Director, MDL and RAdm Sanjay Sadhu, AVSM, NM, CSO (Tech) at MDL in the presence of Commanding Officer (Designate) Capt. K K Choudhury, MDL Directors, WOT(MB) and Navy personnel today.
  • The ship is constructed using Indigenous Steel DMR 249A and is amongst the largest Destroyers constructed in India, with an overall length of 164 meters and a displacement of over 7500 Tons.
  • The ship can accommodate a crew of 312 persons, has an endurance of 4000 Nautical Miles and can carry out a typical 42 days mission with extended mission time in out of area operation.
  • The indigenous content in P15B Class Destroyers is 72% which is a notch above their predecessors P15A (59%) and P15 (42%) Class Destroyers, reaffirming the Government’s focus in ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ Programme along with large eco system development of sub vendors.
  • This ship has completed all Sea Trials in 03 CSTs (Contractor’s Sea Trials) including firing of major critical weapons in the very first CST.
  • The first Ship of P15B (Visakhapatnam) was commissioned on 21 Nov 2021. The 2nd ship (Mormugao) was commissioned on 18 Dec 2022. The 3rd ship (IMPHAL) has been delivered to Indian Navy on 20 Oct 2023. The 4th ship (Surat) was launched on 17 May 2022 and is at an advance stage of outfitting.

Israel Reveals Three Phases To Its War With Hamas                                            

  • Israel’s defense minister said that after the country destroys the Hamas militant group, the military does not plan to control “life in the Gaza Strip”
  • Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s comments to lawmakers were the first time an Israeli leader discussed its long-term plans for Gaza.
  • Gallant said Israel expected there to be three phases to its war with Hamas. He said it first would attack the group in Gaza with airstrikes and ground maneuvers, then it would defeat pockets of resistance and finally it would cease its “responsibility for life in the Gaza Strip.”

Army Commanders’ Conference Concludes

  • Top commanders of the Indian Army deliberated on the Russia-Ukraine war and Israel-Hamas conflict at a five-day conclave to draw relevant lessons besides focusing on ways to make the force “future ready” in line with with emerging contours of threats and challenges.
  • The situation along the Line of Actual Control with China and ways to enhance the Army’s combat readiness to deal with any contingencies also figured at the Army Commanders’ Conference that took place in Delhi from October 16 to 20.
  • The recent glacial lake burst and subsequent flash floods in Sikkim as well as state of preparedness were also deliberated upon with a focus on instituting mechanisms for better response to such situations.
  • The Army Commanders’ Conference is an apex-level biannual event that is held in April and October every year. The conference is an institutional platform for conceptual-level deliberations, culminating in making important policy decisions for the Indian Army.

Indian Navy To Host Mega Military Wargame

  • India will showcase its increasing maritime prowess at a nine-day mega naval exercise it will host in February that is set to see participation of over 50 countries against the backdrop of increasingly fractious global geopolitical environment and China’s increasing military muscle-flexing in the Indo-Pacific.
  • Navies from the US, Japan, Australia, France, Bangladesh, South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia are set to be among the participating nations in the ‘Milan‘ exercise to be conducted off Visakhapatnam from February 19 to 27 next year, officials said on Friday.
  • It is learnt that all key participating nations will send their platforms and personnel for the wargame that will take place in the Arabian Sea. The drills would also feature in sub-surface and air domains.
