CDS Gen Anil Chauhan Embarks On An Official Visit To France
- CDS General Anil Chauhan has proceeded on an official visit to France. The visit is aimed to further reinforce the robust defence ties between the two nations, which have gained considerable momentum in the last few years.
- During his visit, General Anil Chauhan is scheduled to interact with the senior civil and military leadership of France, including his counterpart the French CDS (CEMA), General Thierry Burkhard, Director IHEDN (National Institute for Higher Defence Studies), and Director General Armament.
- General Anil Chauhan will visit the French Space Command, the Land Forces Command and address student officers of the Army and Joint Staff Course at Ecole Militaire (School of Military). He is scheduled to visit and interact with a few reputed defence industries in France, including Safran Group, Naval Group, and Dassault Aviation.
- The CDS will also visit the Neuve-Chappelle Memorial and the Indian Memorial at Villers-Guislain and lay a wreath in honour of the brave Indian soldiers, who made the supreme sacrifice during the First World War.
Steel Cutting Of Third Cadet Training Ship
- The contract for indigenous design and construction of three Cadet Training Ships was concluded between MoD and M/s L&T in Mar 23. Steel Cutting ceremony of the third Cadet Training Ship (Yard-18005) was held at M/s L&T Shipyard, Kattupalli, on 20 Apr 24.
- The ceremony was presided by Shri Giridhar Aramane, Defence Secretary in the presence of Mr Arun Ramchandani, Executive Vice President, L&T Precision Engineering & System other senior officials from Indian Navy and M/s L&T were present for the occasion.
- These Cadet Training Ships will be utilised for training officer cadets at sea after their basic training ashore. These ships will also extend training facilities to cadets from friendly foreign countries. These ships are likely to be delivered to IN commencing Sep 2026.
Exercise Poorvi Lehar 2024
- Indian Navy conducted Exercise Poorvi Lehar on East Coast under the Operational Control of The Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command.
- The exercise aimed at validation of procedures towards assessment of Indian Navy’s preparedness to meet Maritime Security challenges in the region. The successful conclusion of XPOL 2024, reaffirms Indian Navy’s resolve to meet growing security challenges in the maritime domain.
Rajnath Singh Leaves For Siachen; To Interact With Armed Forces
- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday left for Siachen where he will interact with the armed forces deployed in the region.
- Earlier, he was scheduled to visit Siachen on March 24 to celebrate the Holi with troops, but due to ‘inclement weather’, the programme was changed to Leh, where the Defence Minister celebrated the occasion with armed forces at Leh Military station
- The Siachen Glacier is located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalayas and is often considered the world’s highest battlefield.
- Earlier on April 13, the Indian Air Force celebrated the 40th anniversary of the famous ‘Operation Meghdoot‘ which was carried out by the Indian forces to gain control of the Siachen glacier by thwarting Pakistan’s efforts to capture it.
Army Progressing Rs 6800 Cr Desi Shoulder-fired Missile Projects For China, Pakistan Borders
- Amid shortages in the inventory of shoulder-fired missiles to tackle aerial threats on borders with China and Pakistan, the Indian Army is progressing two cases worth over Rs 6,800 crore for developing Very Short-Range Air Defence Systems indigenously.
- The Army has plans of developing and buying over 500 launchers and around 3000 missiles from indigenous routes.
- “At present, there is a Rs 4800 crore project in which a public sector unit headquartered in Hyderabad and a private sector Pune-based firm have been engaged for developing a laser beam riding VSHORADS which would be used by the forces to protect the borders to provide protection from enemy drones, fighter aircraft and choppers,” defence forces’ officials
- The project would be for developing 200 launchers and 1200 missiles for supplying to the Indian Army and Air Force and the lead in the project is the Indian Army which is the biggest user of these missiles, they said.
Rockets Fired From Iraq At US-led Coalition Base In Syria
- Rockets were fired late Sunday from northern Iraq at a military base in Syria housing a US-led coalition, according to Iraqi security forces. In response, the Iraqi forces launched a major search operation in northern Nineveh province and found the vehicle used in the attack, they said in a statement.
- It comes days after Israel reportedly responded to an Iranian attack with a drone strike on the Islamic republic, amid tensions fuelled by the Gaza war.
- The statement from the Iraqi security forces accused “outlaw elements of having targetted a base of the international coalition with rockets in the heart of Syrian territory”, at around 9:50 pm (1850 GMT).
- The United States has around 2,500 soldiers stationed in Iraq and nearly 900 across the border in Syria as part of an international coalition created in 2014 to fight the Islamic State group (IS).
‘Complete Madness’: Israel Rebukes US over Reported Sanctions Plan
- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he would fight against any sanctions being imposed on Israeli military units for alleged rights violations, after a United States media outlet reported that Washington was planning such a step.
- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials have strongly criticized the United States for reportedly planning to impose sanctions on the Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) Netzah Yehuda battalion over alleged human rights violations.
- The US-based Axios news site on Saturday reported that Washington was planning to impose sanctions on Israel’s Netzah Yehuda battalion, which has operated in the occupied West Bank, though the Israeli military said it was not aware of any such measures.
