SSB Raising Day: Saluting the Guardians of India’s Northern Frontiers

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm greetings to the personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) on the occasion of its Raising Day, appreciating their steadfast commitment to national security. In his message shared on social media, the Prime Minister highlighted that the dedication and courage of SSB personnel embody the highest ideals of service and sacrifice.

The SSB is a Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) functioning under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It plays a crucial role in safeguarding India’s borders with Nepal and Bhutan, while also contributing to internal security and disaster response.

Established in 1963, the force operates with the motto “Service, Security and Brotherhood.” Headquartered at Udaipur, the SSB is currently led by Director General Sanjay Singhal, IPS. With a strength of over 94,000 active personnel, the force has been allocated an annual budget of ₹10,237.28 crore for 2025–26, reflecting its growing operational responsibilities.

Indian Army’s Judge Advocate General (JAG) Department Observes Corps Day

The Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Department of the Indian Army marked its 42nd Corps Day on December 21, underscoring the importance of military justice and discipline within the armed forces. On this occasion, the Ministry of Defence released a podcast focusing on the evolving role of the JAG Branch in modern warfare.

The JAG Department traces its origins to the British Articles of War of 1385. Following independence, the Army Act Bill was introduced in Parliament on 21 December 1949, making this date significant as the official Corps Day of the JAG Branch.

As the legal backbone of the Indian Army, the JAG Department handles court-martials, disciplinary proceedings, and legal advisory functions. The Judge Advocate General serves as the principal legal advisor to the Chief of Army Staff, offering guidance on military law, international law, and operational legal matters. A landmark development this year was the Supreme Court’s decision to remove the cap on women’s induction in the JAG Branch, reinforcing the constitutional principle of equality.

Harimau Shakti-2025: Strengthening India–Malaysia Defence Cooperation

The fifth edition of the Joint Military Exercise Harimau Shakti-2025 between the Indian Army and the Royal Malaysian Army concluded successfully in Rajasthan. The two-week exercise witnessed the participation of 120 Indian Army troops, mainly from the DOGRA Regiment, alongside 70 personnel from Malaysia’s 25th Battalion.

The exercise focused on sub-conventional operations under a United Nations Chapter VII mandate, with special emphasis on counter-terrorism missions. Joint training activities included raid operations, search-and-destroy missions, heliborne assaults, drone usage, counter-UAS measures, and casualty evacuation drills.

In addition to tactical training, the exercise incorporated Army Martial Arts Routine (AMAR), combat reflex shooting, and yoga, enhancing both physical endurance and mental resilience. Harimau Shakti-2025 significantly improved interoperability and reinforced the strong defence partnership between India and Malaysia.

INS Sindhughosh Decommissioned After Four Decades of Service

The Indian Navy formally decommissioned INS Sindhughosh, the lead submarine of her class, after 40 years of distinguished service. The ceremony was held at the Naval Dockyard under the aegis of the Western Naval Command, in the presence of Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan.

The submarine was decommissioned under the command of Lt Commander Rajat Sharma, while Captain K.R. Ajrekar (Retd.), the vessel’s second commanding officer, attended as the guest of honour.

INS Sindhughosh, a diesel-electric submarine, was commissioned on 30 April 1986 in Riga, Latvia, under the command of Commander K.C. Varghese. As a pioneer of her class, the submarine played a vital role in strengthening India’s underwater combat capabilities and maritime deterrence.

MILAN 2026: India’s Grand Maritime Diplomacy Initiative

India is set to host an unprecedented convergence of major maritime events in February 2026 at Visakhapatnam. These include the International Fleet Review (IFR) 2026, Exercise MILAN 2026, and the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) Conclave of Chiefs, scheduled from 15 to 25 February 2026.

This historic initiative represents a major step in operationalising the Prime Minister’s MAHASAGAR vision (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions), announced in 2025. MAHASAGAR expands India’s earlier SAGAR doctrine beyond the Indian Ocean, emphasizing sustainability, resilience, and collective maritime responsibility.

The event will highlight India’s indigenous naval capabilities and reinforce its role as a Preferred Security Partner. Hosted at the headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command, the gathering will showcase India’s commitment to free, open, and inclusive seas, aligned with the Act East Policy, Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI), and IONS framework.

Pakistan Navy Inducts Second MILGEM-Class Warship from Turkiye

The Pakistan Navy has inducted its second MILGEM-class ship, constructed in Turkiye under a technology transfer agreement. The commissioning ceremony of PNS Khaibar took place at the Istanbul Naval Shipyard, attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistan’s Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf.

MILGEM-class ships are described as the most advanced surface combat platforms in Pakistan’s naval fleet. They are equipped with modern command and control systems, advanced sensors, and state-of-the-art weaponry.

The contract for four MILGEM-class vessels was signed in 2018, with two ships to be built in Turkiye and the remaining two in Pakistan. The induction of PNS Khaibar completes the construction phase of the Turkish-built ships, marking a key milestone in Pakistan-Turkiye defence collaboration.
