UK Removes Terrorism Tag from Syria’s HTS

The United Kingdom has officially delisted Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) — the main rebel group that played a significant role in overthrowing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad — from its list of banned terrorist organisations. HTS, which was earlier linked to al-Qaeda, had been designated as a terrorist outfit in 2017, making any association with it a criminal offence in the UK. The British government had hinted in December 2024 about reconsidering its proscription. Similarly, the U.S. administration under former President Donald Trump had earlier lifted the group’s terror designation. The UK welcomed the political shift in Syria, following the downfall of Assad’s regime, with former HTS leader Ahmed al-Sharaa assuming the presidency. The British government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting peace, counterterrorism efforts, and long-term stability in Syria and the wider Middle East.

India to Induct 800 km Range BrahMos Missiles

India is preparing to induct the advanced version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile with an extended range of 800 km within the next two years. Trials are currently in progress for this upgraded missile, which features a modified ramjet engine and enhanced systems to ensure readiness by late 2027. The current BrahMos variant has a range of about 450 km and travels at speeds of nearly Mach 2.8.

These missiles were notably used in Operation Sindoor in May for precision strikes deep inside Pakistan. Alongside this, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is enhancing the Astra air-to-air missile family — increasing the range of Astra Mark-2 to over 200 km and developing Astra Mark-3 with solid fuel ducted ramjet (SFDR) propulsion capable of reaching up to 350 km. The total contract value with BrahMos Aerospace has surpassed ₹58,000 crore, underlining the missile’s importance for the Indian Air Force, Navy, and Army.

India Plans ₹10,000 Crore Deal for S-400 Missiles

Following the successful use of the S-400 air defence system during Operation Sindoor, where Indian forces reportedly downed several Pakistani fighter jets and a surveillance aircraft, India plans to procure additional missiles worth approximately ₹10,000 crore from Russia. The Indian Air Force currently operates three S-400 squadrons, with discussions underway to acquire the remaining two units from Russia. India is also exploring options to induct more S-400 and the advanced S-500 systems in the future. Despite Russia’s ongoing military commitments in Ukraine, defence cooperation between the two nations continues to strengthen.
