Army Chief Gen Dwivedi to Visit Algeria Next Week

  • Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General Upendra Dwivedi, is scheduled to undertake an official visit to Algeria next week, the Indian Army said on Friday.
  • The visit also follows the recent tours of President Droupadi Murmu and the Chief of Defence Staff to Algiers, which laid the foundation for deeper cooperation, according to a statement from the Indian Army.
  • The Indian Army Chief is expected to discuss strengthening Army-to-Army ties, expanding training exchanges, and enhancing capability development initiatives. With Algeria operating predominantly similar equipment
  • The two sides are also expected to explore opportunities for defence industrial partnership, particularly in areas of modernisation, logistics, and equipment support,” the Indian Army said.
  • On Thursday, COAS Dwivedi met with Ambassador P Harish, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, and Ambassador Abhay Thakur, India’s envoy to Myanmar.
  • “Ambassador P Harish, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations in New York and Abhay Thakur, Ambassador of India to Myanmar, called on Chief of Army Staff Gen Upendra Dwivedi,” the Army said.

INS Khanderi To Receive DRDO’s Indigenous AIP

  • The Indian Navy is set to take a significant technological leap in underwater warfare capabilities with the integration of the DRDO indigenously developed Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system into INS Khanderi, the second submarine of the Kalvari-class fleet.
  • The AIP system, developed in collaboration with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Thermax, had initially been earmarked for INS Kalvari, the lead submarine in the class. However, due to delays in integration and alignment of refit schedules, the Navy has now shifted the focus toward fitting the system onboard INS Khanderi.
  • This will be followed by harbour and sea trials aimed at validating the operational efficiency, safety, and endurance of the upgraded vessel. If the schedule holds, initial sea trials are anticipated between March and April 2027, with the complete refit and testing cycle concluding by July 2027.
  • In December 2024, the Ministry of Defence formalised this collaboration by signing a ₹1,990 crore contract with MDL for the AIP plug’s construction and integration across submarines.

Moscow Eyes Role in Sudarshan Chakra Project

  • India and Russia are entering a new phase of strategic cooperation as Moscow has expressed its willingness to participate in New Delhi’s ambitious defence initiative, the Sudarshan Chakra project.
  • The system, unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day address, is projected as a next-generation air defence platform that will augment India’s indigenous capabilities. Russia, given its long and tested record as India’s military partner, sees itself as an integral player in this program.
  • However, the geopolitical pressure exerted by the United States and its allies constitutes a persistent challenge, forcing India to strike a delicate balance between old strategic partnerships and evolving engagements with the West.
  • The PM’s remarks that Mission Sudarshan Chakra will not only neutralise the enemy’s attack, but will also hit back at the adversary “many times more”, points at the impending expansion of India’s conventional (non-nuclear) arsenal of ballistic and cruise missiles. These new missiles will include the induction of the new 500-km range quasi-ballistic missile Pralay and the 1,000-km range subsonic long-range land-attack cruise missile. The increase in strike range of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from 450-km to 800-km is also on the anvil.
  • There could also now be a green signal for the operational deployment of Phase-1 of the indigenous two-tier ballistic missile defence (BMD), which as per DRDO is designed to track and destroy enemy ballistic missiles in the 2,000-km range class, at different altitudes both inside (endo) and outside (exo) the earth’s atmosphere for “a higher kill probability”.
  • In July last year, India had also successfully flight-tested an endo-atmospheric interceptor missile under Phase-II of the BMD system, with the defence ministry proclaiming it demonstrated the indigenous capability to defend against hostile nuclear-capable missiles in the 5000-km range class.

Sergio Gor As India Ambassador

  • President Donald Trump on Friday tapped close political aide Sergio Gor as US ambassador to India, sending one of his feared enforcers at a delicate time in ties with New Delhi.
  • The 38-year-old Gor rose quickly in conservative politics to become one of the most powerful, if low-profile, aides in the White House with a task of vetting some 4,000 appointees to ensure utmost loyalty to Trump.
  • Gor’s enemies include Elon Musk, who following his spectacular falling-out with Trump branded Gor a “snake” after he scuttled the tech and aerospace billionaire’s choice to lead NASA.
  • Trump has moved to ramp up tariffs on India to pressure it over its purchases of energy from Russia, despite Trump’s own diplomacy with counterpart Vladimir Putin.

India to Make Advanced Jet Engines With France

  • In a major boost to India’s fifth-generation fighter aircraft programme, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday (August 22, 2025) announced that India will jointly manufacture advanced jet engines with French aerospace major Safran.
  • Mr. Singh was speaking at an event in Delhi where he said that the collaboration marks a decisive step in India’s efforts to achieve self-reliance in defence aviation and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers. With engine manufacturing work set to begin in India, the project is expected to fill a critical capability gap and accelerate development of indigenous fighter aircraft, he said.
  • “Our vision of self-reliance in defence is not just about reducing imports. It is about creating an ecosystem where Indian industry, public and private, develops world-class capability, where we not only meet domestic requirements but also emerge as a global supplier of high-quality defence products,” said Mr. Singh.
  • “DRDO has cleared the proposal by Safran, which already makes a variety of helicopter engines in India, as the best option for the twin-engine fifth-generation fighter called AMCA (advanced medium combat aircraft). The project, with DRDO’s lab Gas Turbine Research Establishment, would cost almost $7 billion,” an official said.
